Any point in having a friendship instead of a rivalry?
It seems like having rivals is a good thing in combat and it doesn't make any difference to the story. Maybe I'm missing something.

Friendships tend to come easier and grant stunt chance while walling. Rivalry is of course more flexible as it doesnt require walling and definitely in most cases outshines friendship of you can stack 2+ rivalries on a character with a high stunt chance.

But doing that can be hard if you're not tailoring your characters and decisions with the primary goal of making them hate each other.

Ah, I didn't realize the walling stunt bonus was just for friends. I was actually thinking about the choices at the beginning with the starting three. I don't tailor my decisions after that to make them hate each other. It just comes naturally.

Definitely not a bad thing, rivalries also open up several relatively rare events with interesting rewards.

Afaik, there can only be 1 rival and 1 lover for each character. So, while both rivalry and love seem more flexible and powerful, they are a rare occasion.

right, each hero may only have 1 lover and 1 rival. There are stories that focus on rivals and rivals get different lines in a lot of stories, but we play it more as "frenemies" or "coworkers who can't stand eachother, but still grudgingly respect eachother," rather than "nemesis" or "blood enemy."

Oh, didn't realize rivals were capped too, that explains a lot.
