Fix for window Mode
I wasn't able to set the Game to window mode, the game reduced the Color-depth of the Desktop and disabled the Windows Aero-Theme.

Finally I found a fix:

1. Get the Tool DXWND from https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

2. Then create a text-file named RRT2.dxw with this content:
[target] title0=RRT2 path0=C:\PATH_TO\RT2_PLAT.EXE launchpath0= module0= opengllib0= notes0= registry0= ver0=1 coord0=0 flag0=134217768 flagg0=1207959696 flagh0=20 flagi0=138416132 flagj0=8392832 flagk0=65536 flagl0=0 flagm0=0 tflag0=0 dflag0=0 posx0=50 posy0=50 sizx0=1024 sizy0=768 maxfps0=0 initts0=0 winver0=0 maxres0=6 swapeffect0=0 maxddinterface0=7 slowratio0=2

3. Replace "C:\PATH_TO\" with your actual Path.
4. Import this file in DXWND. Now you can run RRT2 in a Window.

If you get an error "Failed to Find Steam", add your Steam-Path to the Windows System PATH-Variable. (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2951360)

A year later, but thank you!

Thank you so much! Did this today and works perfectly.

Sorry, but where does one install this and which is the application? I cannot seem to install this after unzipping it.

Once it's unzipped, it's as installed as it needs to be. I put all my programs that don't use Windows Registry in a Program Files w/o Registry folder, but you can run it from anywhere.

You have to double click on DxWind.exe to start it, or you can make a shortcut and put that shortcut where you'd like.

However, it didn't work for me.

For those of you who want to do this still in 2023, you'll need the GOG version and DXWND.
I play this game in a window at 1920x1440 on a 5120x1440 super ultra-wide screen, on Windows 11, and it works flawlessly. LOL

No need for any fancy settings.

1. Download the GOG version of RRT2 and install it

2. Download DXWnd

3. Extract DXWnd to a folder named DXWnd on your desktop

4. Open the folder, right-click dxwnd.exe and select Properties, click the Compatibility tab, check the "Run this program as an administrator" box and click OK to close the window

5. Open DXWnd and click Options > Add

6. In the Name field, enter "RRT2"

7. In the Path field, enter the following:
C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Railroad Tycoon II\RT2_PLAT.EXE

8. Under Window initial position & size, enter the following:
X = 50 Y = 50 W = 1920 H = 1440

Note that you can enter any 4:3 resolution in the W & H fields. Any of the following resolutions will do:
800×600, 960×720, 1024×768, 1280×960, 1400×1050, 1440×1080, 1600×1200, 1856×1392, 1920×1440, and 2048×1536

9. Hit "Try..." and see how it looks. You can mess with the resolution variables to see which run best on your monitor.

10. Enjoy this classic game!

Thank you for the detailed instructions. I'm curious about why the GOG version is specifically needed. Why can't we use this same fix with the Steam version; what's the difference?

DXWnd is unable to work with steam version of this game. I wasn't able to fix it yet. If I find one I post it here.

You can fix this by copying the file "steam.dll" from Steam's main install directory to the game's directory. (Default is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Railroad Tycoon 2 Platinum)
I've tried everything on this thread but I still can't get the game into Windowed mode.
