Won't run on windows 8.1 64bit [SOLVED]

It will load a black box in the left hand corner of my screen but won't do anything more than that. I have verified files and even reinstalled as well as compatibility. Is there anything else I can do to get it to run in windows 8.1?

Hmmm sorry to hear that but it is running perfectly well on my system which is also Windows 8.1. Is there any sort of error message or anything displayed.

There is no messages or anything. Is there a settings file? I can't find it and I had this issue with another game and all that I needed to do to fix it was change it to windowed mode.

Go to the game install directory, right click the .exe file > properties > Compatibility
just fiddle with the settings in there until it hopefully starts working!

same here windows 8.1 64 bit.

i get a crash shortly after start. when i change compatibility settings on the exe it then cant find steam.

Are you running the ( testapp ) or the actual executable file ( RT2_PLAT ) ?

I have Windows 8.1 64 bit as well, and it's running as it should. There might be something weird going on with a driver perhaps. (just guessing here) Have you tried updating to the latest drivers for your graphic cards? I'm running the latest drivers from Nvidia.

After the last driver update (came out today) it just magically worked.

I Had the same problem, I updated my video drivers and added "/ 800600" (without the quotes) in the "Set Launch Options" under properties in Steam

i have win 8.1, 64 bit and it works fine. Also works fine on my old Win 7, 64 bit system, and on my laptop with widows 7, 64 bit. They all have intel proccessors, and dedicated graphics card. Not sure if it would work with intagrated grapics or not though.

Same problem, someone please help me Dx I've messed around with compatability.. I get one error half the time, get "can't find steam" half the time.. And it's usually a block box in the top left corner.. I've tried messing around with everythign and updating my driver. PLEASE HELP

all win8+ reinstall gfx drivers from gfx card hompage then
you might have to reinstall games or goto redist dir inside steam game and run apps there this is all games its seem that win 8+ have change something if upgrade to win8

some allso need to add administrator to game and steam.exe if needed

The following are some of the more common problems you might have, and

A) Program displays 'Unable to set up video mode' message when I try to
run it...

This is usually because you're video card is incapable of displaying
in 800 x 600 mode. Virtually all desktop PCs sold since Fall of
1996 (and most since 1994) are capable of this, but a few aren't,
and many laptops aren't capable of this resolution, including newer
models. To determine if your machine is capable of this resolution,
Right-Click on any empty area of the Windows desktop, click
'Properties', then 'Settings', then adjust your screen area to be at
least 800 x 600 (1024 x 768 is even better), and hit 'OK'. If your monitor
is unable to display that resolution, then you won't be able to play
Railroad Tycoon II.


B) The screen is all garbled as soon as I run the game, or as soon as the
opening video is over.

This probably means that although your video card supports the
default resolution of 1024 x 768, but your monitor doesn't. Try
running using the '800 x 600' version.

Same problem.. Just comes up with a black screen. I have windows 8, nvidia card and it's updated to the latest drivers. computer is only 1 year old (Dell). I can't launch the EXE cause it just gives error message saying can't find Steam. If I load the program from steam, just comes up with black screen.

Where exactly do I find the ""Set Launch Options" under properties in Steam? I didn't find anything like that.
