I believe they need to do it with the first one too, but make it less arcade-y (I see you Railroads!) with a more realistic economy.

Aye Agree!

Of course they do, but who will do it? The developers have all moved on. We don't even know if the source code exists.

The game is way to complex for modern audiences. Also it does not win itself. Look at the latest Tropico or Rollercoaster Tycoon. The genre is now about building neat little houses and watching the money roll in. RRT2 with its harsh business movement, the ability to abandon one's company and just move on with one overtaken from an opponent or letting the stocks crash on purpose is way beyond what players are capable to understand these days.

A bit more easier to get started but the economy is more realistic and you actually need to know what you are doing on higher difficulties in order to succeed.

Look to the Paradox titles... Europa Universalis, Stellaris, Cities: Skylines. They are proof that there are still players who want that kind of complexity.

We just lack someone willing to create a train game on that model. But once we have this, I'm sure Paradox would love to be the publisher.

Never liked RT3 that much. The textures are absolute garbage and a nuisance to look at (RT2 is brighter and easier on the eye), and the UI is not as easy to work with in RT3. I could go on, but to the point, a game closer to RT2 would be better in my opinion, just with a few gameplay fixes, some texture upgrades, and a modding community. Similar to what Microsoft and Forgotten Empires are doing with Age of Empires Definitive Edition.

I hated RRT3. They changed the economy so resources naturally trickled into cities via rivers for example, so you 'd setup a route to a city that needed X, only to find out that it's worthless once you got there because it got X from another source.

I'd definitely buy a RRT2 modernized version though, like they did with Baldur's Gate, Age of Empires, and others. 3D in these games doesn't make them imo; gameplay rules.

totally agree with h4rrs3r. 3's too ugly and simple. RRT2 is one of the great games ever. the only problem i have with it is that you can't build your own industries -- but, it's got the greatest ingame editor ever: you can set up a map anyway you want, with as much resources as you want, and set your loco speeds to match real time travel times between cities. you can make chicago a real multi-industrial town with several towns in its region. you can control economy growth or ♥♥♥♥♥♥, commodity availability and town growth rates.

i like the map very much in RRT2. the new game 'railroad empire' kept to this kind of map graphic and that's the only good thing about 'railroad empire'.

I think sid or 2k is out of this strategic type of games, and if you google this several other companys has moved in and make many train games.

ps.
problem is we need a fan site with Titles some train games name is way-off and will not be the first you will guess as name, to google for.
