I had the same problem, it is a screen resolution error. You have to change your resolution to something ridiculous if you have a landscape monitor. The only size I could get to work was 1024x768

i tried all of them no go :( i've tried every fix i could find on the internet lol it starts up but as soon as i go into a scenario it changes resolution and freezes my comp.

Same here, does anyone know what the direct draw error is or why it happens?

I had this problem also. I got it working by running this file located in the main game folder named: Rt2 (force 800 x 600 mode).bat. Once I double clicked on it the games runs fine.

I forgot to mention that I also copied the steam.dll into the games main folder to get rid of the can't find Steam error. Found that in another post. So I did both of them to get it working. Sorry about that.
It is strange that these bugs started happening out of the blue. It used to work with no problems at all when I fist got it. Hope this helps you to get yours working

I have isolated a problem that may be the issue for many people on this forum. I have Windows 8.1 64bit. Nvidea GT 620 card.
the game loads fine when clicking either RT2_plat or force 800x600.

I can play a scenario with any map. Build railroads, save games etc.

I can start a campaign and get to the campaign game selection screen (whistle stop tours etc).

The crash happens when the opening video for the campaign games start. Since this is not necessary for the game to work (see scenarios above), is there any way to TURN OFF/ diable those animations?

Thanks!

I tried both of these and I get the theme that starts playing but no screen opens up. Anything else I should try?

yea i've given up on it. i tried that and a few hundred other things. i found a website that deals in old games and anno 1602 is now running on my comp. so steam is just gonna lose out on future bis. Thx for caring and trying to help.
What worked for me:
- Disable all compatibility modes, etc., just leave the defaults
- Properties > Local files > Verify integrity of game files
- Set the display resolution to 1024x768

Been done. It starts but as soon as the game goes to the campaign. The movie starts, and the game freezes in the upper left side 1/4 of the screen in 1024x768. Tried everything only thing that works is getting out an old laptop and playing the game on wondows 7. So it looks like gog.com gets my old game business from now on. Seeing how i've downloaded older games from them and they all work on windows 10 without all these issues.Thank you for the help.

I had the same problem after playing 100 hrs. I used all the ways mentioned before like changing the resolution to 1024x768, running Rt2(force 800x600 mode), using compatibility mode and it did not work. Finally I deleted nvidia 3d programs and it works. You may check if there is any program that is related to video card and delete it.

Copy and paste the steam.dll fiel into the Railroad Tycoon 2 folder, double click the Rt2 (force 800x600 mode) dos windows pop up. Once it has started running, select any scenario, then go into settings, gameplay and untick 800x600. Exit to desktop and run the game from the Steam window. Hope this helps.

Windows 10 64bit, Nvidia Geforce 1050Ti, FX6300, 8GB memory
