Water buckets don't work.

Had a water bucket outside though 10 rainy days never filled up. If you have to physically see it in the rain it's useless.

I had this happen too and later on figured out that, if it's been set up too close to the wall of the house, it considers the bucket as being indoors for some reason. Is this the case for you as well?

Upgrade your workstation to lvl 2 and you can build one

Only build 2 buckets though. Any more and the agent gets suspicious. When your workbench get lvl 3, you can build a watertank. With 2 buckets and a watertank you will have more water than you can use.

Or build more than two buckets and remember to clean up after yourself before the agent comes around.

Did that mistake but also placed the buckets covering the entirity of the bakcyard. Every free spot exclusing the trash can. Had a bucket. None of them ever fill up.

Sometimes they fill slightly to just under the first bar before reseting completely at random.

work fine for me, I have two in garden, cant build anymore as dont know how to get more plastic, I have level 3 work bench but never seen a water tank as an option to build, I will check tomorrow.

Only way I've found for more plastic so far is to buy things that are made of plastic and disassemble them - which isn't terribly cheap. Once the hunter trusts you enough, though, and you're deep enough in the forest, you can make good money off trapping. Bear traps with the best bait in level 3 of the forest is quite nice.

You'll have to upgrade the workbench a time or two to be able to build the water tank, or raise the trust level of... I forget which trader in order to buy one. Side note - buying the water tank is a good way of getting more plastic.

This thread is old...but, the water buckets do not work for me.
I do not have them close to the house.
They fill up but do not let me take water from them and after a short while they refresh to empty and start to fill again. So I cannot get the water, am I missing something or is this a glitch?

I had a max of 14 water buckets outside. I just recently started playing again to try out the new DLC. I had no issues and water buckets did fill.

Also, once they fill they will automatically drain into an Irrigator or tank for storage.
