Questions about trade items & canned food
Two unrelated questions:

  1. Do trade items (feathers, wolf skins, gold, etc.) have any use beyond trading/selling? Wondering if they're used for quests/crafting later, or if they're purely a way to make money. Should I hold on to anything, or sell everything ASAP?

  2. Does canned food go bad, or can it stay unrefrigerated forever? Things like canned soup, tuna, or field rations.

Thanks.

1) wolf skins are used to make warm cloths which becomes available after you upgrade your workbench. You only need 2 to make 1 set of cloths, after that it goes into the bin of just sell it for coin/faction.

2) everything apparently has a timer, canned goods last longer but can still go bad. Although that being said I've been able to refresh the timer on berries by simply stacking them with a fresh set. I "assume" this would also work for canned goods. I'm sure you are going to ask how long do canned goods last. Sorry I don't know it would need to be tested in order to figure it out, since I don't think the dev's said yet.

Thanks.

Any other items you know of that are needed later that look mostly like "making money" items? Feathers, racoon tails, antlers, gold, other minerals from the mine, etc.

And I wasn't about to ask how long the canned goods last... lol

I was just curious about if they had a timer at all. It's a bit frustrating that food doesn't even give you a rough idea how long it'll last (things IRL have a "best before" date, after all), but I'll have to settle for knowing that there's at least some benefit to keeping them in the fridge.

As for stacks and resetting the timer, I think it just slows it down but doesn't reset it completely. A single item won't make a big stack that's turning orange go back to green, but a few items will make a dent in a medium stack. I guess it kind of averages out, or something.

Hello there! For your second question, everything goes bad. It may take a very long time but it still does :)

Thanks for confirming!

Equipped canned food never spoils, I've had a stack of 20 for 6 months now : good as new. Same for my equipped energy drinks.

That means enjoy it while you can, it'll be gone in the next patch... lol

Freezer - stuff never goes off.
Unless you are canning incorrectly or using sub-standard cans it should last so long that it would not even show the slightest age related decay over the duration of this game. Fair enough stuff you salvage in the wild may be near it's 'best before' date but that's getting a little particular if they implement that sort of thing.

Also stacking old items with new items doesn't actually refresh the freshness of items it just sort of magically averages out the freshness over everything so you are really just ageing your fresh stuff. Up to you I guess.
I have no idea how this game handles splitting stacks that contain items of differing ages but it definitely takes it into account somehow. Try it. Watch the colours.
