Question about storage

Hi there, are the many shelves only for sale and decoration? I crafted all of them (there are good looking big ones, Bob has in his mine) and placed them, but I wasn't able to open them to put anything inside.
Only furniture where I could stow things are the wardrobe and chests. Is it meant to be that way, is it a bug or do I things completely wrong?

you can drop items into the world by drag&dropping them. This works on the floor, top of tables, shelves and crates, at least.
