how the hell do you do the insta kill thing?

seriously ive been training over and over and it seems almost random. sometimes i swear i even did it wrong and it works then i feel i did it spot on and he just dodges and normal attacks or kicks.

i tried dodging then pressing square didnt work
tried dodging and pressing square at the same time sometimes works
tried dodging and pressing square just after hitting dodge and works a bit better again but still not reliable.

i also know about dodging left when they swing left then pressing it and dodging back when they swing down or up but still seems like a 50/50 shot at getting it right. also doesnt help the game keeps auto switching targets instead of letting me choose when i want to switch targets.

i dunno how i beat this game before the controls drive me nuts lol

Insta kills are called critical hits. and You can perform them if you press the attack at one moment before the enemies attacks hit you.(Which is hard to do it.)

The easiest way I managed to do it most of the time is hitting block a microsecond before being hit by an enemy attack and then instantly pressing the attack button.

Only downside is that you end up waiting for long stretches for an enemy to actually attack you.

You can get enemies to act a bit more aggressive if you hold down the button to absorb souls.
