Personally, my favorite is probably Genma, but they're all pretty great in their own ways.
Mainly because it's just a weird juxtaposition compared to onimusha 1, where the series had horror roots, and then 2 just drops that for a more samurai action story with demons, alot of silly characters, and romance and friendship sidegoals.
I still don't think it's a bad game but it was such a juxaposition is definitely didn't make good first impressions.
Onimusha 1 > Onimusha 3 > Onimusha 4 > Onimusha Tactics > Onimusha 2 > Onimusha Blade Warriors.
The first Onimusha is perfectly paced and built, it's near perfection to me. Even its short lengh and simplicity are qualities : the game design is very focused and efficient, and this is peak replayability to me.
Onimusha 3 is fanservice and has its weird moments, but it's so much tons of fun, it's a rich game, wonderfully paced, generous, the peak of action/adventure on 128 bits era, I can't unsee it's qualities. And Jean Reno, for god's sake !
Onimusha Tactics is a nice little spin off, and a clever way to avoid many difficulties and still bring the series to the handleds, instead of trying to brute force the Onimusha formula into the GBA (even if many others IPs did it managed the challenge surprisingly well, it's still an interesting route they took for Onimusha).
On the other hand, I consider Onimusha 2 to be a bit too much cringey for it's own good, Not a bad game, but still, far from being as good as the others. It's the first Onimusha minus most of what made it shine : it's tone. While Onimusha 3 is different and daring enough to emancipate from the first two games, the second Onimusha is just a "what the ♥♥♥♥ happened ?!". From a level design perspective, it's not as good as the first. The gameplay, also, is messy and the game design is going in weird directions, it doesn't feel polished and some ideas should've been abandoned or fleshed out instead of released in such a state. And, more importantly to me, it's tone misses the mark. I was not much of an internet boy at the time, and my friends were not onimusha players so I was out of the general consensus, but it was so obvious to me that the second one was the weaker of the series (if not for Blade Warriors) that I am genuinely surprised to discover it was the other way around.
And 4, damn...I really like 4 these days but the japanese version is FAR better than the english, not just because it has a full english option but because the balancing is way better, there's difficulty selection from the start with I think an even harder difficulty available, enemy balancing isn't affected by a hatred for the rental market so they aren't damage sponges.
Wonder if Hell mode will be in 2, though.
