Predecessor to Dark Souls
Anyone else agree with the statement? (Albeit it being just my opinion)
Onimusha used to be one of those difficult games that many never finished due to it's difficulty.. I myself had a hard time with the first 3 games, the fourth was a lot easier. But played the heck out of all of them, pretty sure would've gotten the platinum trophy if there were trophies back then for that game. Demon Siege remains as one of my favorite games of all time.
Thanks for this remaster, Capcom!

I saw someone draw some lines in comparison and I can kinda see them, but otherwise Dark Souls/Demon's Souls has its own actual predecessor in the Kingsfield series I believe

With the fixed camera angles and tank controls it's more like a Samurai Resident Evil which Capcom is also known for.

I think that Genma Onimusha and the Ninja Gaiden games were the Dark Souls of the past.

Onimusha was more of a survival horror with a slower pace, while Ninja Gaiden was extremely difficult with the fighting and the reflexes. I think that Dark Souls is closer to Onimusha, because it has the atmosphere and is more grounded with the fighting.

However, to be fair, Ninja Gaiden Black (or Sigma) is harder than both games (especially if we played the game in its highest difficulty), and the protagonist would probably destroy all of Dark Souls’ boss easily, if we take into account the gameplay and the options.

What??????? its Resident Evil in Tokugava period, it's almost identical to RE first games. Finished it many times and all those stupid games of breaking pots to get specials for the game.
Can only confirm that the game was great, but needs extra content nowadays. Special character maybe as an achievement. I remember how i was mesmerized when discovered that in-game movies were european , but could be changed for native japanese with all their intimacy ...where are all those days ...

I agree. When I first played Demon's Souls in 2007, one of the first things I noticed was how sword/weapon-play felt like Onimusha's. And let's not forget about the use of souls and leveling, not to mention the difficulty. İn the other hand, the perspective was the biggest difference between these games.

Uhhh what? How is the gameplay of Onimusha even remotely similar to Demon's souls? And aside from the fact that the exp for both games is called souls, the leveling systems are completely different. I don't think any of the weapons even look similar.

The closest series to Onimusha is easily Resident evil, the predecesor of the souls games were kingsfield/shadow tower like someone else mentioned.

It was more predecessor to God Of War 1 imo.

1.In GOW you can upgrade weapons similar to Onimusha games.(Upgrade screen looks the same)

2.In GOW the way that camera moves was similar to the camera of Onimusha 3.(But they improved that a lot)

3.GOW was a onimusha game in mythology era according to the producer of GOW.

4.GOW had 2 kind of weapons like Onimusha(Ranged and close)

5.GOW has a health bar and magic bar similar to Onimusha

6.Violance in GOW is inspired of the violance of Oni but more extreme.

7.I remember Onimusha was the first Hack'n slash game that had a guard button which GOW used as well. GOW also had an invincible power up for a limited time which onimusha games after 1 had.

8.GOW also has chests like onimusha.

This is a remake of the first Onimusha, which was a VERY early PS2 game. Somewhere around late '01 or early '02 unless you got the Greatest Hits version or got it on XBOX.

I can't remember off the top of my head how it controlled exactly, but it was very close to Code Veronica. Fixed camera angles, press X to go up stairs, that kind of old school RE stuff.

Unless they completely overhauled the game to the point of it playing like another game entirely with the Onimusha story and locations tacked on then if you go into it expecting a third person hack n slash like Dark Souls or GOW you will be very disappointed.

I said sword-play, not gameplay. Or more like physical combat mechanics. Locking on enemies, attack types, blocking, dashing and parrying are very similar in terms of combat elements in these games. I'm not talking about filmsy perspectives and it's byproduct of tank controls. And Resident Evil? Get out of here. That's a survival game not action.

Have you *played* it? The controls are very similar to resident evil, the theme is similar as well. Not to mention they are both from Capcom. They took a lot from resident evil when making it, kinda like how they did with dino crisis. How is the sword play remotely similar to what you see in Dark Souls? I dont remember dark souls having magic special attacks...
I don't remember any critical hits that let you 1 hit ko chains of enemies in dark souls either. I don't remember being able to parry/riposte in Onimusha....
You can block in lots of games, that doesn't mean Onimusha is suddenly similar to Dark souls.

Nothing is remotely similar to dark souls in Onimusha.

Edit: and I am not sure you have noticed but one of the Genres Onimusha falls into is.... survival horror *gasp*. The first game had a bigger emphasis on horror elements than later games in the series.

Actually i remember interesting mechanic about the game, if you cut right in the time of striking (like as if you parry ) you one shot monster and he gives yellow souls for health. Thats for sure. Only it was very dificult to pull off. I did not know about that gaming concept of parrying so it was like 3-4 times per game and simply by accident. just a fan fact.

imho Onimusha Warlords is very easy, so it cant be compared to souls game. No matter the souls, upgrading, swords, whatever..Its holding ground between hack-n-slash and souls games. It's easy to fight scheme allows you to feel the game differently, namely in souls game the terror made me sort of invent the story like filling the blanks with no help, and here you just enjoy what is given (and given good it was). I can compare different fears to walking in the night in dangerous district and visiting good horror-house in some attraction park.

What you describe there is what the game called a "critical hit". You could chain it to OHKO entire groups of enemies if you timed it right, its not the same thing as parry/riposte though. You can gaurentee a critical hit if you attack right after a level 1 magic attack too (though that is only in the genma version and later entries, so not relevant to this one).

I enjoyed playing Onimusha 3, and Ninja gaiden 2, yet to play other games in Onimusha series, also played Ninja gaiden 3, only finished Onimusha 3 yet to finish both ninja gaiden games as I came across them lately.

I think It's more of Resident Evil but with katana instead. Especially, If you play Onimusha 3 and reach centain point in game, you'll get to play one particular character who carry a gun and grenade, it's basically a scream to all Resident Evil gameplay out there.

Beside, Onimusha doesn't only feature sword-play, they pack with puzzle too, same to RE.
