There is even a better way to avoid it at all costs: hit and run. Whenever he performs an action, he will stand still for 2 or 3 seconds, aftack him. After that, go away. It will take a while to beat him but thats really safe.
In regards to seeing it coming, he only does it when you're close to him. Usually it happens after he swipes you away and then tries to fingerpale you. In terms of animation I don't really have any info to share, as I pay more attention to Samanosuke than whatever I'm fighting.
You can interrupt him by using Shiden (lightning magic), or if he's close enough to it you can use Arashi (wind magic) to knock him down.
Easy boss, get the Bishimon sword and just magic power nonstop.
This advice won't help him very much if he wishes to get the achievements, which demand us to complete the game on normal. Beating the final boss with Bishomon won't help him very much.
However, Fortrinbas can be really difficult without the Bishamon sword.
