you guys need to download 1.05 patch first then 1.06

I explained it on the recent posting.

When installing it you need to tell it the right location. The patch tries to install it to the hard copies place. Example on the steams location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Railroad Tycoon 3

I'm getting "not the right version" even though when I run it it says 1.05. I've corrected the install dir to match where steam put it. Anybody make it happen?

Instead of starting a new thread... does anyone have a pointer to instructions on how to apply the 1.06 patch to Steam's version of RRT3?

I patched up to 1.05, then copied the game directory to my home (User) folder in Windows. Then I added the NoCD hack to make it work. That version (outside of my Steam folder) seems to work, although I've only tried it for 15 or so minutes on the tutorial. I was able to change the resolution while in the game to 1600 x 1050.

I then successfully patched the version in my Steam\steamapps\common folder (which at that stage was identical except it didn't have the NoCD hack) to 1.06. When I tried to run it I got a 'no disc inserted' error. I installed the NoCD hack and repatched to 1.06 (without uninstalling the patch first). The game would then start, but as soon as I tried to change the resolution from the default (you press F6 and can then change some settings), it would close with a generic Windows error message. I've deleted the game from Steam. I might reinstall and try to get up to 1.06 again, or I might take my working 1.05 copy as a starting point, try to patch that to 1.06, and run the game from outside Steam.

Hopefully this is helpful to someone. I may post here again, or I may not. It could be months/years before I really get a chance to play the game properly so I might have forgotten all about this thread.

Just found these instructions. Haven't looked at them in detail yet but may give them a try.

The hawkdawg site seems to be easily the best place for Railroad Tycoon information, so you could browse there for more info.

tony was right. Even though the game comes patched to 1.05, you have to apply the 1.05 patch anyway. Then copy over the NoCD crack, then apply the 1.06 patch, and then copy over the Vista/7 fix. But even after all that, I can't change the resolution in-game without it crashing. But if I just copy the game directory into my Windows user folder, it seems to work fine. Tried disabling broadcasting, the Steam overlay and quitting Razer Cortex, and none of it made any difference whatsoever. What might work is to change the resolution to a higher one (e.g. 1600x1024) using an external (outside Steam) copy of the game, then copy your config file into your Steam copy. But you still can't change the resolution back if you wanted to.

If you installed the low resolution fix (the d3d8.dll) file, try renaming it to say "d3d8.dll_" and then run the game and change resolution. It helped me :)
Instructions are here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/7610/discussions/0/540733523454433782/
