How to make rope

I'm having a problem finding cotton to make rope. I need to make a large well, the wood and stone are easy enough but I cannot find how to make the rope. I know it is something simple and I'm missing it, can someone help me out?

you need the first quest from the magician. he wants you to give him silk for his balon, after that you can make it and you have the option to make rope.

I gave the green fabric to the magician, but still no rope. I finally had enough resources to make MORE green fabric. We'll see if he'll return and I can get the rope recipe on the next visit. At this point, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or if it's a bug. :-|

Looks like I'm out of luck. I'm on the 3rd quest from magician (grow a giant pumpkin) but I still don't have rope, which makes it impossible to really progress in the game. It's starting to look like I'd have to start a completely new game, and I don't know if I have the patience for that. It seems to be a repetitive cycle of plant, work, harvest, fight, eat, sleep, repeat. :-/

EDIT: I don't know if this is the normal way to get rope, but I had to build a kitchen in my house first. NOW I have rope. :)
