you can always explore other areas first - or even just sneak around and steal loot and come back later on to the hard parts when you have better equipment
but you don't need scraps for anything except hand grenades and probably some med kits. In my last play through (2nd, actually, and yes, it will be my last play with this game) (I abandoned the first session because I was called a cheater for no reason, then I realized that's a feature of the game, no matter how many time you replayed, you will be always be called a cheater) , I only spend scraps on 2 hand grenades and 1 med kit. Never bought anything else from Iridia because she had nothing useful to offer - the items are random and never get refreshed, and I can get the best weapons the game can offer in chests. I ended the game with sheet load of scraps.
There is nowhere else you can spend those scraps, Delta only takes weapon parts for upgrades. Elder is not selling anything and Prepps gives you grogs for free if you have artifacts.
One thing you need to do with this game is stop thinking in terms of level and start thinking in terms of your team damage vs their ability to take it and the enemy teams damage vs your ability to take it. And by take their damage i'm talking about using medkits, cannibalize, taking cover, minimizing their damage through any means possible via items, skills or the landscape. This game isnt like other games where if you attack a mob that is much higher level than you then all your hits are glancing blows or whatever. If you have the right hit percentage your attacks will hit. From there it becomes a matter of taking away their damage before they take away yours. I've taken my level 25 i think it was group of stalkers and gone up against level 30 or 35 or some really high level wild dogs and killed them with no problems. Treat them like any other mob or group and look at your damage output+ability to take the damage versus theirs.
Now as far as the specific encounter next to the Chinook? throw 1 frag grenade from each stalker if you want to do it the easy way. If you've been killing every mob and exploring every area from the start of the game up until this point you should already have two frag grenades just from looting stuff so just go buy one more. Or skip the area until later when you are able to find a 3rd frag laying around somewhere or looted from a mob.
