Game Crashing? Easy How to fix for Windows 7, 8 & 10.

Does your game crash? If yes, please follow these 5 simple steps.

Basic overview: Manually patch the railroads.exe file, this will stop the game from crashing!
Time to patch: < 5 minutes.
Technical Skill Required: 1st Grade computer level. (Copy and Paste)
Other: CLOSE GAME BEFORE PATCHING!

Step 1.
Download the fix here.

Step 2.
Open the zip file into a temporay directory, and view the README.TXT
i.e. C:\railroad-patch\

Step 3.
Copy the RAILROADS.EXE to this new temp directory. (C:\railroad-patch\ )
Default directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Railroads

Step 4.
Correct the railroads.exe file.
Run file: Startme.bat
A menu will appear. Press A
Then press E to exit the menu. Press E

Step 5.
Copy the RAILROADS.EXE file to the orginal game directory.
Default directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Railroads

Step 6.
Load and Play the game. And be happy.

Seriously this take less than 5 minutes to fix, if you want to play the game you'll need to patch it manually. If you just want to complain, then go outside and yell at the grass for being green.

Just to let people know - this is still a viable solution. I downloaded the RailRoad.exe file from this page: http://smrsimple.com/2010/11/simple-guide-to-the-3gb-enabler/ and from this link to bve exactly: http://www.smrsimple.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/RailRoads.zip and replaced that .exe file with the old one within the Steam folder as metioned.

Running Windows 10 Pro version 1703 build 15063.540

this fix worked for me, running great now (Windows 10). The wording is a little confusing in the instructions so I can see why a few people were confused. you just need to move railroads.exe to the folder where you extracted the zip file, run the patcher, then move railraods.exe back to the game directory. also don't forget to backup your original railroad.exe

sadly not working for me might have to refund, starts playing music for a few seconds and drops back to the windows screen. if i alt tab it does not play any other ideas?

have you tried uninstalling and re-installing it? sounds like it maybe a corrupted install. ..then apply the patch again.

Crash before and after that patch. ( 4 gig gpu... i5 system so its this game). Everything is set to low or off. I did note that the sound starts to bug out a little when moving in the game as soon as you stop it returns to normal. Full screen mode, looks to crash more then windowed mode for my system.

I don't think your problem is related to the memory issue solved by the LAA patches (I don't remember getting an error message after a crash, but it's been years since I've had a crash, thanks to the LAA patch, so I can't remember for sure.), but if you want to try changing the value directly in the exe (IMO it's much easier to avoid a mistake), you can try the manual hex editor method: http://steamcommunity.com/app/7600/discussions/0/35221584409498211/


(At first I misread your comment as 4GiB RAM, so the following might not apply to you)

Also note, that the patch might not help much on a pc with just 4GiB of RAM.

Polaris, if you don't trust it, launch a VM of windows, install the game and run the patch. Besides, if that exe was bad, i think you would see more than three pages of comments and steam would have removed the posting.
