Looks like whatever that patch did... didn't work.
I don't think your problem is related to the memory issue solved by the LAA patches (I don't remember getting an error message after a crash, but it's been years since I've had a crash, thanks to the LAA patch, so I can't remember for sure.), but if you want to try changing the value directly in the exe (IMO it's much easier to avoid a mistake), you can try the manual hex editor method: http://steamcommunity.com/app/7600/discussions/0/35221584409498211/
(At first I misread your comment as 4GiB RAM, so the following might not apply to you)
Also note, that the patch might not help much on a pc with just 4GiB of RAM.
If you only have 4GiB of RAM, you might have a 32-bit system, in which case you will also have to patch windows itself, using steps 2 and 3 here: http://web.archive.org/web/20170906115030/http://smrsimple.com:80/2010/11/simple-guide-to-the-3gb-enabler/
