Sid Meier's Railroads!

Sid Meier's Railroads!

I have lost hope for a sequel.
I used to play this game all the time. Always wanted to see a sequel with better graphics. Top down works perfect, would be very cool to zoom out to see the entire map. A game without track crossing or other cheats. Sad that it will probably never happen, trains is not really sid meier's thing. Probably will just see civilization and other similar games until he is dead or too senile to make more games. :(

Actually trains was meier's thing. He created the original railroad tycoon. I played it when it came out decades ago.

Alas I too wish there would be a sequel. I am puzzled as to why firaxis won't try another go at this genre. Instead they fail with the recent civ in space game. Just bought this game on the cheap, played it years ago when it first came out. I adore the attention to detail.
Damn memory crash is annoying.

Don't fret there are other devs producing train games. I had fun with one made a few years ago. Still not at the caliber of this game thought but it showed promise and that dev stated they are working on a sequel..

problem with this game is lack of trains that loose its way, they should have added better signal that will have solve all even RRT1 has that one direction signal so we can make a flow

sooner or later if to many train on track they try go around the world and that can cause a crash, and thats why they dump this project, and they should also made it possible to say to train goto station platform 1 so we can split trains in directions per station . they have a goto nearest no matter how many tracks they keep crossing all tracks...

example
2 citys with a curve between them and you have cross track for double track they will keep cross over and block eachother even if you made them 4 track. its nearest point to nearest point .. that will cause alot of crash issues soone or later... ask anybody here that has played over 100 of hours they will learn dont make loops in train system or to many choise trains will not follow best choise only nearest to nearest or first build track in the overlay they act odd in some cases

Dude, this IS the sequel with better graphics. But somehow it didn't seem as good as the original, Railroad Tycoon.

I played this game for a few months when it first came out, then I went back to RT3. I'm hoping for a new RT game, but I won't hold my breath. We've been disappointed too many times. SMR feels like a sequel to the original Railroad Tycoon. For example trains can't just turn 180° and go in the opposite direction. You have to set up the track or turntable for a train to turn around, so it's more realistic than RT3 in that way. But the stock market is way too simple. Also, I've had cases where my company owned 90% of it's stock but was still bought by a competitor, so it has its shortcomings. I think the only way we'll get a decent sequel is if the fans build it themselves. Just my opinion.

my 50 euros still waiting for sequel

a sequel shouldn't eliminate crossing tracks - it should add them as a feature. Real railroads lease their tracks to each other all the time. Im pretty sure that either one of the tycoon versions of this game, or transportation tycoon had this as a feature. They should bring it back.

the recent success of the various truck driving simulators may give us hope that a true railroad business management game (and not a 'train simulatior') will happen soon.

Train Fever is a really good spiritual successor. Check it out.

RT3 definitely lets you run on your competitor's tracks and vice versa. I'm not sure about RT2, though. The only problem is that you can't jack up the prices for competitors using your track, the game just charges them the standard rate and gives it to you as misc income. It would be nice if you could charge your competitors a premium price for using your track or not allow them access to it at all, like Vanderbilt did in real life.
The Men Who Built America www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WNgcFjGFc8 is an awesome documentary if you can catch it on the History channel.

NO. Its not a bad game but there is no Competitor AI and the industry system isnt even close.

I too wish for a new version of this, but with Civ 6 just coming out, and I doubt they will fix the AI issue wwith that game, this one will not get a reboot. This is the only game that SCREAMS for a new version

1: Same here . Played all three RRT games , though the third one was not as good . Couldn´t select freight manually as we should have .
2: Absolutely .
3: Not like RRT series and Sid Meier´s Railroad!

The various train simulator games are just for driving the trains , not for building an empire while playing .
Imagine a RRT 4 with the graphics of Sid Meier´s Railroad! , and more different freight to deliver than all the other combined ? A signal system that actually works ?
Now That would be a RRT worthy of it´s title .
(I wonder if that would be qualified as a direct sequel to RRT 2)

There are no games I am aware of that adequately merge industry with railroads. Train fever was awful. Train simulators even more awful. I don't have a hardon for trains. I have a hardon for strategy themed in the industrial era. A huge difference that most game developers seem to fail to grasp.

I kind of miss the "spreadsheet sims" of the 90's like Airbucks or Detroit. You advance month by month and manage your company by analyzing profit and loss statements, sales and marketing reports and stuff like that. It's not my favorite kind of sim, but it makes you look at the business side of your company as well as the actual product or service.
