Mammoth's Map Curation Thread
I like to review maps at random from time to time, and I thought this would be a nice place to keep track of them.

If you'd like me to take a look at your map, give me a shout. Be warned though, I don't like to sugar coat things.

A coastal map, which sees a large naval invasion force land troops onto a beach next to a castle structure. The castle structure is infested with skeletons, and some human archers, whilst the landing force consists of mostly armoured troops. The map is set up as a spectate battle, rather than a player involved one.

Weighing in at 250 units, it lags like Hell for the first couple of minutes, with an average FPS of 10. Once the slaughtering starts, the landing forces get stuck at the foot of their boats, which bottle necks the skeleton army and leads to a quick slaughter - and reduction in lag.

After this, the skeleton army breaks away, and then confronts the second half of the invasion force that has landed without being confronted. You then get a second battle between these two forces, with a good FPS ratio. The reds however, in their armour, easily outclass the skeletons and slaughter them all.

And then you get to sit and watch the reds painstakinly take apart the castle as they attempt to kill the 11 or so archers up on the ramparts.

I'll give this a 5/10. If you would reduce the unit count a bit to ease the lag problem, it would have been better. Also, put some hills on the map! Nothing is uglier than a flat a map! The castle itself was decent, and the actual battle was kind of entertaining - if one sided - once the lag went away.

A Zombie Survival map, with a heavily fortified castle (8 miniguns, 2 at each entrance, with 1 high powered sniper in each tower).

The Zombies have no chance of getting anywhere near the player, removing the challenge - and as there is no time limit, I'm fairly certain this map could literally go on forever without the player having to lift a finger.

The author has put down the entire AW3 arsenal, so one could argue this is a good map for testing weapons - however, I find I can test weapons just fine in my own armoury that I never felt the need to publish, so this idea is redundant for me.

The terrain is bland and sloppy, showing little effort beyond creating a large chunk of land in the ocean biome - which of course inhibits the zombie spawn zones, meaning you're only going up against about 50% of them.

2/10, I'm afraid.

Taking inspiration, if I had to guess, from my Mythic Campaign - 01 map, we see a Greek force assault a fortress of Hades.

Well, what can I say? It appears Hades LOVES his windmills - and you know what else? Hades also LOVES his high powered sniper rifles. This map is difficult, as the player has very little in the way of dealing with high powred sniper rifles, given that he has a crossbow/longbow and the ranges involved.

I gotta be honest, I did not like it one bit. Remove the snipers, and make the fort actually accessible and we'll talk.

3/10.

Eh, it was fun.

The player starts in the middle of a post-apoc town, with a few buildings scattered about haphazardly - and a large zombie force coming straight for him. Armed with a baton and a bolt action rifle with 15 rounds, he must run past the horde to safety.

Along the way there is a cheeky armoury, which acts more as a trap than as a relief point - because there's only one exit and the zombies pile in soon after you enter it.

However, what makes this map fun is when you reach the safe zone with the friendly soldiers guarding it. Seeing loads of zombies get gunned down never ceases to get a smile out of me.

5/10.

I'd of liked to see this map get a bit more detail put into it, but it was fun - if brief.

I actually really enjoyed this map.

The player takes part in a line-defence against an on rushing horde of zomies and red post-apoc soldiers. Seeing the swarm of undead coming towards your line is awe inspiring, if a bit laggy, and before you can say "eat my brains", your defences are awash with the undead.

My only critique is: 1) the initial lag, 2) it goes on a bit too long. Perhaps cutting the time in half might be a good thing to do, as by then most of the Zs are dead.

I'm going to give it a 7/10.

War is Hell.

And so is attacking Fort Ironcrad!

This is a beautiful map, which if I had to guess, attempts to take on the Battlefield franchise - a daunting task, all things considered, but the map achieves to a good degree.

The player starts off in the battleworks outside of the Fort, and must navigate mortar strikes and tank shells to rush up the slope- and then he has to fight his way through a whole bunch of suckers to get to the first flag.

From there, the map opens up quite wonderfully, although A.I pathing issues hampers friendly support, the player pushes further into the fort. Snipers in windows, and campers parked around tight corners, threaten the player every inch of the way. With the second flag capped though, it's time to take out revenge on the mortar teams that have been sending you back to the spawn point the whole time!

After you've rendered justice to these devils, you are now sitting upon a kind of balcony overlooking the battlefield - and WOW what a view. From here, your friend Mr. RPG can take some shots at the tanks below, opening the way for your team to advance.

The whole thing unfolds like an epic, and I cannot emphasise enough that this map is less of a battle, and more of a journey - a heroe's journey.

One of my alltime favourites for sure, and recently updated.

8/10. Pathing issues hold this beast back from a perfect score.

I'll get around to it tonight. Haven't been around much this week, so apologies for that.

Destroyed Desert is a bland map, with bland execution. The scenery feels as if it were just thrown down with little thought, the terrain is flat and boring, there are no roads - and worse, it uses the anoying Beach biome with those blasted seagulls that haunt my dreams with their obscenely loud screams. Trees and rocks are also off, which is odd, considering the map is empty already.

The gameplay itself is straight forwards and simple, though it does provide a bit of entertainment at least - mainly by providing you with a minigun firing range, allowing you to test its effectiveness against a troop helicopter and a whole pack of Blue enemies who attack you all from one direction. Not very difficult, not nice to look at, and the concept could do with some serious work.

Were it me? I'd of turned those collection of buildings into a whole town complete with roads and objects, and had the Blue team approach the player from several directions - forcing him to actually fight to survive, rather than minigun-snipe.

It's a 4/10 for me.

High Culture Campaign Level 1's story, I feel, doesn't match up with what we see in game. The map itself sees the player defend a small camp from an attack – but I'd of preferred for the aforementioned convoy to have arrived to relieve the defenders.

Nevertheless, the map functioned okay – apart from the fact that the attackers do not use the bridge, due to its improper positioning, and wade through the river instead. Moderate challenge, moderate fun :)

The second mission is a fun little siege map, which sees a small fort attacked from two sides. Functional and fun, with some nice looking scenery, it's a stronger entry into the series than the first mission.

Mission three had potential, but I found it far too frustating to complete. The map sees the player and a small force of friendlies ambushed in the middle of the town, with Red soldiers charging out of houses to engage them. The first 5-10 seconds of this map are really cool, but unfortunately, the enemy come fully equipped with a regiment of crossbowmen who kill in a single shot.

The crossbowmen make this map extremely frustrating, as it is near impossible for a player to take on several Red guys in close combat, whilst dodging 1-hit-1-kill crossbow bolts. And there's not just like, 2 or 3 of them, there's 10 or more.

Not my cup of tea.

5/10

And I've stopped here, after realising Level 4 was populated with my newly found super OP crossbow friends.

I dunno man, your campaign might be suited to some people, but for me it got tedious from level 3 onwards.
thanks for the feedback! i will improve my destroyed desert map and make it better for you!
ah, the Egyptian crossbowmen. i didnt know they one hitted, or i would have changed them. i couldnt really do much map testing because of my terrible potato, but i did what i could at the time XD I discontinued that campaign. It was fun while it lasted though.
