As for using cover, I'm not sure how that could be done, I don't think AW3 is designed for it and implementing that kind of system might be wayyy complicated. That said, perhaps it's possible to add something like "cover nodes" around flag areas so that rather than dog piling onto the flag, the units split up and take up positions on the nodes - but again that might be wayyy complicated.
Beyond shoving things into each other on AW3, my knowledge of game design is limited.
I'm sure JN would give you an answer one way or the other though.
And yeah, the squad system is almost perfect APART from the fact your buddies will just sit there and die unless you attack something, which is messy and ineffective. To fix it, I think simply giving them default A.I when enemies are in range would do fine but i unno.
Eh, I think you can do it pretty well with the existing tools. Have some units on guard, behind objects, and have some units on patrol that move around from object to object - then mix them with some guys who are on "default". That way the player faces a very dynamic environment.
Even AAA companies have been unable to beat the A.I of the Elites in Halo CE, or the Grunts in Half-Life 1 for that matter. It is a depressing fact of the gaming industry.
As good and as gorgeous as JN is, I don't think he's got much of a horse in the race either. Still, maybe he'll be able to tweak a few things, work a bit of magic maybe.
