Captain Forever Trilogy

Captain Forever Trilogy

Hi Farbs! And other Captain Forever comments.
Alright so first off, Farbs, if you read this, cool game.

Seeecond off, I found Captain Forever on a random website... thing, I forget how exactly, years ago. I thought it was cool but I wanted more of it.
Years later I randomly discovered a sort of, fluffy kids-ish themed one (Sorry Remix...) that I didn't really vibe with, which made me feel a wave of sadness because I didn't think there would be more of
the kind of captain forever that I was seeking. So color me pleased when I saw the trilogy appear on steam at some point.

Alright, so, here are my notes on the captain forever-ses

Classic captain forever:

- The rad game I fell in love with
- Primary issue: Enemy ships are just, incredibly, stunningly good at making you destroy every single useful module onboard in order to defeat them
- Operating at a loss: Once you go up a "tier" of enemy ship spawns, they rarely go back down, but you do. This results in an almost insurmountable obstacle when you're fighting "Hotel" tier ships and they bust your guns and you can barely damage any ships you see
The fact that your ship's parts are destroyed extremely quickly, and to defeat enemies you tend to wind up breaking all THEIR stuff makes it waaaaay too easy to fall into a figurative hole
- Parts I feel I should be able to use are destroyed: If I separate a large section of a ship from its command module, all the parts disintegrate, I feel like they should drop for use, it makes me feel kind of cheated.
- Enemy ships don't recognize each other at all and it's really silly. They WILL kill each other and not react at all.
- Maybe I'm just bad but I tend to die around the time you hit the white tier ships when I play this one
- I don't like my odds of ever unlocking that secret mode...
- Don't worry about the difficulty comments, maybe I'm just bad

Captain Successor:

- It's Captain Forever with more parts
- Problems I observed include "space stations"
Thematically, they're cool! Functionally however, they present a big problem in that they're basically just like drilling a safe, can be very time consuming, also they never have any thrusters so they're sitting ducks
Furthermore, the fact that they don't have any thrusters means there are none for me to salvage.
On many playthroughs I wouldn't find anything BUT space station class enemies, how does this random generation work?
- Ships that are reduced to nearly nothing can become impossible to finish off quite a lot

Generally, I feel like most of the time I win fights because the game dropped some terrible inbred ship that can barely move that I can easily outmaneuver

I eventually reached the ????? law tier because a couple Kilo class ships killed each other and I was able to sweep up some parts. Is the game over once you fight the Kilo tier clone of your current ship?
The AI couldn't really fly it very well and it was strangely easy, after which there was an assortment of normal ships that I could easily thrash, no more Kilo tier enemies appeared
I noticed the broken heart icon on my ship had become whole; Does that mark the end...? Eventually I got owned by a ship that was another me, RIP.

- Question: Mr Farbs, what is a repair module? I couldn't figure out how to make it repair anything

Captain Imposter:

- Ok so this one is cool, but there is one big big callout I need to make, the background is just, too much, like "this is giving me motion sickness" too much. I really wish I could turn the background intensity down/off, also a minimap for all these games in general would be aces.

Are you still doing anything Farbs? I'm really interested in Dawn Star, but all I can find is 9 year old videos and links to strange files that I'm not smart enough to do anything with.

I'm still holding the candle of hope given that this forum has posts as recent as May of this year...

Also just wanted to say I'm very sad that it's far, FAR too late to become a Captain Forever supporter.

Switch to the "captainforeveruniverse15" Beta branch on Steam to play the latest Dawn Star. Captain Jameson was renamed to Dawn Star, and then later to Captain Forever Universe. Farbs hasn't updated it in over a year but it's still much more polished and upgraded over the Dawn Star you may be used to.

Indeed. Captain Forever IO[captainforever.io] now exists and is being actively updated.
