gathering 15 should gove you 3 proverbs, idk if you can find extra in the world

friends occasionally tell/send you proverbs too, after you give them gifts

glad it helped, I haven't encountered rotten apples in my game yet, so I was applying general knowledge - it should work the same for all things that have proverbs

Throw apples into fairy rings to get rotten apples. Cowpat Farm and Candlewych Village have them.
