Hazel Nutt doesn't want her cat back?

I have Cat Rescue, and I got misty the cat to follow me after it took forever to find it, but it was so late my character fell asleep in the woods. I found Misty a couple days later (cat still following me) and I've tried interacting with her... but she doesn't seem to notice that i have her cat. I've been petting it and feeding it fish. So... what do I do? Release it?

Yeah, the game words that quest incorrectly. You don't actually need to have the cat follow you back to her. Release it, then go find her, that might finish the quest. The only 'reward' for completing the quest is the ability to buy cats from her for 10 gold, so if when you talk to her there is a 'Buy' option, then you're good.

You bring the cat to her house not her. So was she in her house when you found her?

The first time I did it, the game also didn't recognize it as finishing quest. I tried the second time few days later, with the SAME method, it finally recognize it. Maybe the quest is still a bit buggy? (idk)

A hour or so ago, the cat she wanted was in the house. I brought it to her and she refused. I continued to explore the area and found the same cat that was following me inside of a tree with its own animation. I've heard it can be on a stump too, I interacted with it, the cats merged into a singularity and I died. (That last part was a joke, after they merged I was able to go back and turn in the quest, guess finding it was some sort of trigger.)

Maybe you need to find it again? The area should be random, that or they changed it between the guides I looked up.

The cat she wants is the one in the tree, all the cats wandering around are not lost. Just rescue it from the tree and the quest is done

As Kai says, there are lots of cats wandering around the woods; the one she wants is always in a tree. And again, while the game says to get the cat to follow you back to Hazel, that is unnecessary. Just find the cat, press the interact key, and the cat will hop out of the tree and make its own way home.

At that point find Hazel and talk to her. There won't be a 'task' option or anything like that, just do the regular interact then talk action and she'll thank you for finding the cat and offer to sell you cats going forward.

I found the cat in the tree! I then went to Hazel and completed the quest! Thanks for the help
