How do you fish?

you'll get a fishing rod from twigs *if I remember the name correctly* (take the north exit on the farm map)

I have, i did the opening scene and tried giving gifts. I wonder if its a bug.

He will give you the rod, and then you have to go fishing. After that you'll have to give him a fish as a gift.
Don't know if you got a bug there. Seems like that.

Are you supposed to get the rod before the opening scene where you grow up? I already did that.

I spoke with him once and he told me to go catch him a fish. To get a fish, you have to hit it with the end of the line, then reel.

I don't know if you have to go to him before the grow up. I have spoken to him before that point. But it sounds like this is the problem.

Are you sure? Maybe it's in your inventory. Under Equipment - I think. At one moment I thought I'd lost my bucket but it was in my inventory and I was blind for not seeing it :D

no, I had to restart the game and got it then. You have to get the pole before the opening scene where you grow up.
