Is there a larger over-arcing story like Subnautica, or is it just crafting and survival? I'll probably get it either way, but I'm curious.

Hello!

There is a bit of story, however the main focus is on survival elements, such as crafting, maintaining your resources, oxygen and h2o levels, building a base, and living a happy life on the Red Planet.

Will we be given objectives from earth to for example, search location for X, build a small outpost at location Z, find water at location Y, recover crashed satellite, etc?

Or just survive until you die of boredom?
I'm a little worried about there being no "end game" goal... Subnautica was a big hit because of the different biomes and the story. The crafting was great (though Occupy Mars looks even better in terms of crafting) but you could go around "living a happy life" until you were ready to win the game and leave the planet. Are there any long term story goals?

They have planned a story continuation but are still working on some other subjects of their roadmap [roadmap.occupymarsgame.com], too.

Are you refering to subnautica or subnautica below zero?
As far as I remember there were 2 kind of gamers... Those who liked the story mode and those who prefered the sandbox experience. I think there were a lot of disagreement about the differences between those 2 games.
Below Zero was decent, but not even in the same league as Subnautica for me. The first game was simply incredibly good. Being able to find all those radically different biomes, each with its own different lifeforms, and then gradually teasing out the virus information... Just good storytelling. And you didn't have to move it along quickly, since you could spend as long as you liked just building up bases and exploring new areas. I'm glad they're going to add in some kind of a story in post-launch since it already looks like the crafting in this is much more interesting than Subnautica.

But I have to say, they should dump the controls on the CO2 scrubber. You've got tons of different devices with their own control circuitry, yet this one piece of gear overheats, requires fiddling with valves manually, and can't just be set for a specific O2 output? Doesn't fit the vibe of the rest of the game at all.

Is the campaign the same as free play once you reach the escape capsule or is there something else like a rescue?

Depends as after the escape scenario you are left out there without ERA probably knowing you survived. But it sure can be an oppertunity where you get an objective after initial setting up a base to establish connection with earth and then you get certain missions from earth as well as setting up research projects etc up to the point as landing pads for those rockets to replace alpha base.

And I do hope there is more tot he campaign then there is currently in the future as otherwise why should I go through an annoying and frustrating scenario like the escape vs free play?

It's just like freeplay. So if you want to start a new game without the tutorial bits, just create a free play game.

In another post, they mentioned they plan on expanding the campaign to have more of a story, but right now they are fixing more pressing bugs, etc.

Don't know how much story is in the campaign but that we will discover while we progress in the campaign. But it is right that they want to expand the campaign later.

The freeplay is better for those who just want to play in the sandbox.

The choice is yours.

I'm going to continue the campaign and can keep you updated if interested.

After the initial storyline and subsequent solo exploration (trying not to spoilt anything), the only quest i have is 'survive'.
