Water Tank Placement?
been trying to build some extra water storage but i cant seem to be able to place it anywhere, ive gone out into completely flat open ground and its still red and wont let me place it, is it meant to attach to another building or am i just missing something else?

There are two different kinds of tanks ...

Specific oxygen, water (?) and methane tanks have to be added to the well.

Regular, unspecific vertical or horizontal tanks can be placed anywhere.

Probably you only unlocked the specific tanks yet? The unspecific ones are further down the tech tree.

I mostly use the large horizontal storage tanks and sometimes i have issues with placing objects like these as well as solar panels, outdoor lights etc. I find it can help messing with the objects placement using the four arrow keys, so left and right to rotate, but also the up and down arrows can often make it turn green. Sometimes though nothing seems to work.

I have noticed that there are numerous "dead spots" in the terrain where nothing at all can be placed. I don't know if that is intentional or some type of bug in the game engine. It happens even in perfectly flat clean areas with no rocks or other obstructions.

The first water tank you can get, the Well Tank, only attaches to a Sabatier Reactor on a well (which doesn't really make sense because the reactor doesn't seem to do anything when you put a water tank on it)

Not with out adding the extra power the Sabatier Reactor requires. 5 extra per reactor.

Here is the same. Absolutely flat surface, I decided to build solar panels, a rectangle, so that it would be beautiful. But because of these dead zones, there are empty spaces where I can't build anything.

You can try moving the building up and down, and unlocking it from the build grid. I have found that this tends to fix the dead spots most of the time. It seems that in some areas the terrain renders higher than where the mesh actually is.

I find the locations where small solar panels were are the worst. I find when i remove them, i can't build anything there.

This is the problem, the building can only be lowered, it cannot be raised.

Disabling "Build all on grid" worked. Hooray! Thank you!

Hey this worked for my issue too! Thanks! I can now put medium solar panels in the areas where the small ones were :)

Same problem here. Solar panels may work when grid is disabled.

Other items or builds sometimes dont. I try to attach a bathroom to the capsule connector thingy on a corridor. I can attach a livingroom but not a bathroom I do have no idea what it is. Moving the bathroom (up/down, rotating), grid on/off nothing helped.

Ground is absolut flat.

This is interesting, especially to use the up / down keys often seems to work better. Sometimes, there is a literal "fight" between the player char and the surface mesh & grid, and then one needs to employ highest sensitivity and patience - in all three dimensions - to finally be able to keep a ghost object green so that it can be placed successfully (and meaningfully). What I also found out is that if I use the mouse wheel and _always_ make sure that the ghost structure is as _far_ away from "me" ( -> the player char's position) as possible, then there's often higher probability to successfully get an object placed - there's probably some invisible (circular?) border in 1st person mode that excludes any ghost structure from being placed to closely to the player char's actual position (just theorizing a bit, I may be wrong about the latter). I also noticed that when after scrapping a derelict base entirely, it seems impossible to place anything on now empty ground in some places - at first, since - for example after driving away and later returning to the same area - this can become possible again. Technical mysteries!
