Anime made the story better.

In my opinion Anime portrayed the story of Shenmue 1 and 2 better than the games.(Since in open world games, executing the stories well is much more difficult.)

1.In games Ryo is just obsessed with fighting Lan Din in the whole games. While in anime he is more motivated to find the truth about his father.

2.In the anime we got a scene that was removed from the games.(The scene that Iwao tells Ryo he is lacking appeared in the trailer of the Saturn version but for some reason wasn't on the released game)
We also got lots of scenes where other characters interacted with each other which imo fleshed out those characters better than the game versions.
I also liked the scenes of seeing Ryo at school before seeing his father getting murdered.

3.At very least in the end of season Ryo got a small fight with lan Di which was more satisfying than the way Shenmue 2 didn't do anything with him in that part.

The only part of the anime that I didn't like was this that Nozomi going to Canada scenes were removed.(Alongside that scene where she takes a picture with Ryo.)

The anime was "Ok" not bad but not great either, I rate it B+. It did not make the story better.
Then again I can't complain much since it was limited to only 13 episodes since that is how long Crunchyroll anime are.

The anime in my opinion was rushed too much for this reason and many characters and important scenes were removed from the game.

Shenmue 1:
- No encounter with the homeless man that teaches you the ninja move
- Tom disappeared and never taught you the tornado kick move
- Most of Ryo's friends never appeared, instead, we got a picture instead we just saw a picture with them
- Mai's sister didn't exist in the anime
- The giant Pedro didn't appear as a boss in the 70+ man fight and neither the other 2
- Lots of battle moves were not used at all and just recycle Gui Zhang's move which I found lazy and lame.

Shenmue II:
- Ryo never went to work with Crates and never meet his partner that teaches him the uppercut, So basically the harbor was never accessed
- Ren's gang was reduced to half a Dozen when he had a gang as big as mad angels.
- The 3 fighters Ryo had to fight to get in into yellow heads were reduced to only 1.
I wanted to see jeet kune do woman fight, which was one of my favorites
- Master Baihu fight sucked, which is the second most important fight in Shenmue II he was as strong if not stronger than Gui Zhang and Ryo beat him with a single kick...
- After Ryo rescued Shenhua and got out of the river he lost consciousness and then appeared in Shenhua's house which was very dumb in my opinion if you played the game how did a 14 girl carry Ryo for over a day? and skipped one of my favorite parts in the game they through the forest and discovered unique places and finally spend the night in a cave.

yeah no chance it changed the whole timeline left parts out and straight up butchered the story. Its basically an alternate timeline.

Eh didn't even watch it but they told me enough in the other thread to know that eh it suck not worth watching if you enjoy the real story.
