Any modding yet? No Workshop yet?
Any modding to this game yet? Anything substantial? And why no Workshop yet? These games beg for modding and added content from fans!

Yes, I concur. I hope there is a way to apply the classic "xiaopang" mod in the future.

I bet there would be people who would mimic their home towns in this game if they could. We could potentially have the entire nation of Japan in all it's 145,000 square mile glory. Possibly in different time periods, but of course most would want it back in the 80's. At the very least, modders could make every shop already in the game be able to be bought and or traded from. Every building able to be entered, if allowed to be in the first place. So many homes and we know each person has their own residence or just about anyway. Make friends and visit. Also have the ability to play Mahjong in the parlor that already exists. Have actual pachinko machines in the game. Extra areas that were cut off able to be explored as well. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Don't expect that to ever happen with this version though.
Shenmue III would be more possible to achieve that.

Why could it not be done with this version?
Not gonna happen its just Dreamcast Port never suppose Be an addon game while i agree many unused assets left it a game with no use like mahjong and billiard or Even fishing

If it is not going to happen, what was the point of putting it on Steam then? Only for those who have not tried it yet? If that was the case, to some degree they failed due to all the incompatibility issues and more people losing interest or completely hating the series now thinking it is a broken mess or an inferior one.

Seriously modding would be the only thing I would be interested in for this iteration. With out that, I just do not see the point in buying it, certainly not at the price they are selling it for, due to the fact I already own it both. They could of at least added some more SEGA arcade games.

And for it being a Dreamcast port, didn't they fiddle with it to take some things out due to copy rights or something? If they can go into the game to change things like that, surely they could add Workshop support IF they felt like it.

There is modding made by the community.
https://nexusmods.com/shenmue/mods/
Sadly there was no patch from Sega since last year in November and that is why I gave my answer.
Even though it is complex to do so.
Read this article explain the complexity.
https://www.pcgamer.com/how-sega-brought-shenmue-back-to-life-on-pc/
Now Shenmue III been done in U4 engine and that engine is A lot easier and simpler to mod.
Here is Zelda mod in U4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgbGgtq-NMc
Mario 64 U4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDDIDn6_m4M

Shenmue I and II can definitely be remade in Shenmue III engine and it would be 100x Less complex than modding current Steam version which was basically hacked to make it work on PC.

I can agree it would be easier to do from a game engine that allows for it. I can not argue that point. And I can see some people being faithful to the original and making it as close as possible. But I already do not like the newest iterations of Shenmue 3. I do not like the look what so ever of the character models. I am not sure what they were going for, but I simply am not into that style. It looks like plastic. O_o That alone will make it harder and more time consuming for people to bring it back to the original. Either that or they will simply let the graphics be and just remake the old maps and levels... Ehhh...

I would have liked if they had offered tools to make modding more accessible, sadly seems Sega gave up Shenmue I & II.

I have always had ideas for modding, but no practical skill or patience for it. I would of loved to of had used Shenmue as an actual teaching tool for the Japanese language. Saying that, it would of been just as good for Chinese as well for Shenmue 2, (Or where ever there were Chinese immigrants in game in the original.) or where ever else he may of roamed. I already have learned a lot of Japanese just from the original Shenmue from being able to look at the accurate signs and looking them up or simply seeing the translations in game. But I would of liked something much deeper. But I am not qualified to teach Japanese either so that is another hurdle of mine.

We had microphones on the Dreamcast (and earlier) so being able to talk to people and have them respond back to you would be nice in the language. You do not learn a language simply by having your nose in a book or headphones on your head. You have to experience it first hand. Not all of us can visit Japan, much less live there. I was lucky enough to visit and plan on going again some time. But to actually learn the language you have to have it all around you constantly. You need to see, write, hear, speak and even breath the language.

Had my idea ever came to fruition, Shenmue would of been entertaining for what it is, but also an extended teaching tool that would be that much better. The main game would still be the same, but imagine having a mod or side game to actually really "living" in that world and your responses actually have reactions based on what was spoken. From asking for directions in English or broken Japanese some of the older people may look at your queerly. While the younger generation may understand and be able to help you better. Just little touches like that. When speaking in better Japanese the older would be able to understand you better and you them.

And how does the game calculate how much Japanese you already know? When you are on the plane flight there (You play as a visitor or exchange student...) you take a quiz and it gauges your reading and speaking ability. So if you already know "hello" and "goodbye" there is no walking through that, they just say it and expect you to be able to both understand and react in kind. If for instance you do not know "hello" and "goodbye" they would slowly walk you into it and try to ween you off the English counterparts. You may have a guide at first, but after a while be let go to freely wonder the streets at your leisure. Characters might repeat themselves to you a few times before giving up and speaking in English to explain again. In my mind eventually you would learn the full language. At least the common 2,000+ kanji found in newspapers of Japan and be able to speak like a graduated Japanese person from highschool.

Modding of course would continue, and bring more items into the game to make it realistic and new words, idiosyncrasies and phrases that are oddly Japanese, new capsule tools, areas to explore, people to meet, things to do, etc..= It may not even necessarily take place in the 80's, but just focus mainly on learning the Japanese language. If it did it well a LOT more people would in fact buy Shenmue for no other reason than that, as people who may not like video games would like an effective teaching tool and might be persuaded to be a fan of Shenmue in general at the end.

1) That is an interesting idea but is not realistic with current technology and as just a mod.
2) This should be a full blow game and would have to be remade from scratch.
3) Mods usually just replace existing texture and modify existing resources. What you talking about it would be unrealistic for a modder to make now.
4) Wait for 2030 and using Shenmue 3 engine it could be somewhat possible. Once AI advanced enough and it's expected to do so in the coming 10 years then your idea could be realistic to make with a budget. But for a modder really depends on how things go.
5)going way beyond 2030 In the future, if we are able to survive and live long enough we could have virtual reality generated by AI and your plan could be realistic for a modder.

Now I also had dreams and Idea which I posted years ago in Shenmue Dojo.
1)Basically, connect all Shenmue Games and have an airport and boat system that would connect all the current and future game location.
So you can visit Japan and China Any time you want or other locations.
Visit Nozomi in Canada and visit Tom in USA.
We could visit them and do some mission there to help them out.

2) Mod new locations and unlock new and unaccessible areas in the games.
Like the Shenmue one movie theater and take Nozomi on date, I always thought that was going to happen in first game.
3) Go to locations you can't access yet, and expand Doubita and add new towns.
4) Going even Crazier fans could mod their own home town.
5) As well as create NPC, missions and QTE scenes.

Also I would of liked this on the Wii for a few reasons. It was a very well rounded console. Cheap compared to the others. Decent graphics, especially if only worried about Shenmue 1 and 2 graphical wise. Wii was dominating both the other consoles. And the Wii had a lot of other learning games that this would of fit right in, but in my mind, if done right of course, would totally blow them all away.

I believe the Wii Remote even had a microphone or have a headset, a comfortable one, so it does not disturb your gaming and movement, as in not having to stop with your remote to bring it to your face to speak. Plus you could simulate walking around with the remote and nunchuk. Maybe even pull off some fight moves I do not know.

I agree this would not be easy in the least bit, as you would first have to be able to know Japanese or hire/get someone to do it for you, be able to recode for the reactions and of course add the extra stuff. BUT if you mod a game instead of building it from scratch, in my mind at least it should be quicker to do because all the original assets are already there, you would only be adding or changing the scripts. Easier said than done, but it definitely would not be quick to build your own game from scratch either, although maybe be easier to add the speech and reactions and what not.

You people do realize these tools have to be developed and they gotta work and there's gotta be understandable documentation so that 15 year olds can make use of it???
