Shenmue III would be more possible to achieve that.
Seriously modding would be the only thing I would be interested in for this iteration. With out that, I just do not see the point in buying it, certainly not at the price they are selling it for, due to the fact I already own it both. They could of at least added some more SEGA arcade games.
And for it being a Dreamcast port, didn't they fiddle with it to take some things out due to copy rights or something? If they can go into the game to change things like that, surely they could add Workshop support IF they felt like it.

Sadly there was no patch from Sega since last year in November and that is why I gave my answer.
Even though it is complex to do so.
Read this article explain the complexity.

Now Shenmue III been done in U4 engine and that engine is A lot easier and simpler to mod.
Here is Zelda mod in U4

Mario 64 U4

Shenmue I and II can definitely be remade in Shenmue III engine and it would be 100x Less complex than modding current Steam version which was basically hacked to make it work on PC.
We had microphones on the Dreamcast (and earlier) so being able to talk to people and have them respond back to you would be nice in the language. You do not learn a language simply by having your nose in a book or headphones on your head. You have to experience it first hand. Not all of us can visit Japan, much less live there. I was lucky enough to visit and plan on going again some time. But to actually learn the language you have to have it all around you constantly. You need to see, write, hear, speak and even breath the language.
Had my idea ever came to fruition, Shenmue would of been entertaining for what it is, but also an extended teaching tool that would be that much better. The main game would still be the same, but imagine having a mod or side game to actually really "living" in that world and your responses actually have reactions based on what was spoken. From asking for directions in English or broken Japanese some of the older people may look at your queerly. While the younger generation may understand and be able to help you better. Just little touches like that. When speaking in better Japanese the older would be able to understand you better and you them.
And how does the game calculate how much Japanese you already know? When you are on the plane flight there (You play as a visitor or exchange student...) you take a quiz and it gauges your reading and speaking ability. So if you already know "hello" and "goodbye" there is no walking through that, they just say it and expect you to be able to both understand and react in kind. If for instance you do not know "hello" and "goodbye" they would slowly walk you into it and try to ween you off the English counterparts. You may have a guide at first, but after a while be let go to freely wonder the streets at your leisure. Characters might repeat themselves to you a few times before giving up and speaking in English to explain again. In my mind eventually you would learn the full language. At least the common 2,000+ kanji found in newspapers of Japan and be able to speak like a graduated Japanese person from highschool.
Modding of course would continue, and bring more items into the game to make it realistic and new words, idiosyncrasies and phrases that are oddly Japanese, new capsule tools, areas to explore, people to meet, things to do, etc..= It may not even necessarily take place in the 80's, but just focus mainly on learning the Japanese language. If it did it well a LOT more people would in fact buy Shenmue for no other reason than that, as people who may not like video games would like an effective teaching tool and might be persuaded to be a fan of Shenmue in general at the end.
2) This should be a full blow game and would have to be remade from scratch.
3) Mods usually just replace existing texture and modify existing resources. What you talking about it would be unrealistic for a modder to make now.
4) Wait for 2030 and using Shenmue 3 engine it could be somewhat possible. Once AI advanced enough and it's expected to do so in the coming 10 years then your idea could be realistic to make with a budget. But for a modder really depends on how things go.
5)going way beyond 2030 In the future, if we are able to survive and live long enough we could have virtual reality generated by AI and your plan could be realistic for a modder.
1)Basically, connect all Shenmue Games and have an airport and boat system that would connect all the current and future game location.
So you can visit Japan and China Any time you want or other locations.
Visit Nozomi in Canada and visit Tom in USA.
We could visit them and do some mission there to help them out.
2) Mod new locations and unlock new and unaccessible areas in the games.
Like the Shenmue one movie theater and take Nozomi on date, I always thought that was going to happen in first game.
3) Go to locations you can't access yet, and expand Doubita and add new towns.
4) Going even Crazier fans could mod their own home town.
5) As well as create NPC, missions and QTE scenes.
Also I would of liked this on the Wii for a few reasons. It was a very well rounded console. Cheap compared to the others. Decent graphics, especially if only worried about Shenmue 1 and 2 graphical wise. Wii was dominating both the other consoles. And the Wii had a lot of other learning games that this would of fit right in, but in my mind, if done right of course, would totally blow them all away.
I believe the Wii Remote even had a microphone or have a headset, a comfortable one, so it does not disturb your gaming and movement, as in not having to stop with your remote to bring it to your face to speak. Plus you could simulate walking around with the remote and nunchuk. Maybe even pull off some fight moves I do not know.
I agree this would not be easy in the least bit, as you would first have to be able to know Japanese or hire/get someone to do it for you, be able to recode for the reactions and of course add the extra stuff. BUT if you mod a game instead of building it from scratch, in my mind at least it should be quicker to do because all the original assets are already there, you would only be adding or changing the scripts. Easier said than done, but it definitely would not be quick to build your own game from scratch either, although maybe be easier to add the speech and reactions and what not.
You people do realize these tools have to be developed and they gotta work and there's gotta be understandable documentation so that 15 year olds can make use of it???
Better get to it!
