Shenmue 1 not working
Hi all,

I have recently bought the game on Steam during the sale, and I run into issues with Shenmue 1 that render it unplayable. (For reference, on a laptop with 970M card as well as integrated graphics - Intel 4600). I have checked Shenmue 2 and that opening runs fine.

The menu loads, I can tweak graphics etc. but the moment the introduction cutscene starts I have issues - Ryo is a disembodies head, and then flashing images start appearing, so badly it would carry a content warning for flashing images as, I presume, the graphics fail to load properly. The music and subtitles are fine. I waited through the cutscene (not looking at the screen) and even when you get to play these issues persist. It is not loading properly.

I have tried de-installing and re-installing the game, with no luck. I have checked my driver for my graphics card is up to date (Windows assures me it is). I have tried playing with graphics setting before starting to see if lowering resolution etc. will help - nothing appears to.

My last idea is wondering if the laptop is trying to run Shenmue off the integrated graphics. Unfortunately I don't know how to check as Shenmue does not appear in "Manage 3D Settings" of NVidia control panel so cannot verify.

I was wondering if anyone knows of anything that could help Shenmue run properly? I would have thought I have specs to run it? Thank you

HI all, the issue has now been resolved (I needed to go through Windows to force it to use teh discrete graphics card through Settings, then finding the exe in the right folder). Leaving in case it helps someone else.

You please give a bit more detail? I'm having the exact same problem.

Which settings and which exe do I need?

From Settings in Windows, click on systems, and then scroll down to "Graphics Settings"and then click "Browse", navigate to Program Files (x86), steam, steamapps, common, SM Launch, Sm1, then click on Shenmue. Add it, and you should have option to set it to high performance. That fixed it for me.

I should also mention this is for Windows 10
