How do you feed the damn cat??

I am very familiar with this game, since i've been playing it on dreamcast since i was 8 years old.
However i'm having difficulty feeding the orphan kitten.
I stand in front of it and press R, and options only to "Call", "Quit", "Pet" and "Look" is prompted.
I also have tried to stand in front of it and open my inventory to select the milk, dried fish, raw fish, squid.. ANYTHING and there is nothing prompting to feed the kitten. It didn't even allow me to name the kitten, so the little girl named it for me.
I have gone to the shrine and nothing was available for me there either to work with.

How do i even

It's kind of awkward like all "puzzle" controls in Shenmue. You need to select the food in your inventory (you will get a close up view of it) and then press A (or whatever the equivalent for your controller is) again. If it doesn't work, you may not be close enough or aligned well enough.

Well with the original rerelease there was a bug that did not update the button icons after selecting a food for the cat, but you can still press the interact button and feed it anyway.
