Their stories are also completely different. Shenmue 's story is basically a murder mystery/revenge story with a lot of influence from Hong Kong kung fu movies and Chinese legends.Yakuza is a crime drama.
Shenmue is more grounded in reality. It’s less chavy (english word) more mature in themes and character development.
Shenmue is about one young man’s jouney into adulthood and a larger destiny.
Shenmue is way more down to Earth, and -boring- in a sense. It's very mundane, but that's part of the charm. In Shenmue, you have a basic revenge plot, but our protag is just a highschool kid. Aside from defending himself in fights, he doesn't do crazy things. He plays arcade games, he works part-time jobs to save money, and investigates.
Fight scenes are scripted to happen when they happen, there are no true random encounters like in Yakuza, so you have a finite amount of fights you can get into (In Shenmue 1 anyway).
It does indeed have a similar drive when it comes to how the story is handled, you walk from person to person, trigger cutscenes, advance the plot, ect. Sometimes a fight or QTE happens.
As for sidequests, there really aren't sidequests in the traditional sense like in Yakuza. It's more like optional things that have little no consequence as your days pass, like feeding the Kitten. If you keep up the kittens health, you'll get a few scenes, but no reward outside of feeling good. Sometimes a person will ask you to do something, and it may lead to a cutscene or fight. So it's kind of a grey area. Just different from Yakuza.
Eitherway, I hope you enjoy the game.
This is my first time playing with, and even hearing the Japanese audio, and I've been enjoying the game in a new light. The games' scenes are much more serious now and it's tonally consistant. Just thought I'd give you a heads up.
not that i hate fantasy, i just think good ol mystery drama doenst need the supernatural
It is about a murder yes. You are basically investigating your father's murder and finding out who killed him and why. There definitely are some mystical elements but most of the story and game is fairly realistic.
>We must keep this amulet that can open a gate and let a monstrous creature into our world out of the wrong hands.
Pick one.
If you enjoy exploration and finding out as much about the world as you can it isn't boring at all. Besides this is not console pleb world we have alot more games that are "boring" and alot more people who enjoy them.
It's like Shenmue fans have anxiety from showing casual console plebs the game back in 1999 lol Also trust me casual console plebs think Yakuza is boring too, they think there is too much talking. lol
Yes. Think of it like a simpler version of LA Noire if you know that game.
