Is this supposed to happen with i inventory key?

I hit i for the inventory the bar pops up on top but it closes as soon as I let go of i key. I can't interact with any of the items

The interaction is very limited. You cannot use items directly in the inventory, it's only there so you can see what you have collected so far.

You will see a cog wheel when clicking on an interaction spot, and only if an item in the inventory matches.
For example a key would match with a lock or with a door or with a locked panel.
