Everyone once in a while I will run a malwarebytes scan but the best thing you can do is bookmark every site you visit and go off of those instead of typing everything in.
Just typing in something like poypal instead of paypal can wreck your day. (problems of typing 70 wpm)
The reason I have elected to back up my stuff on a personal domain/external drive rather than any anti-virus other than windows is because there is always either a seemingly huge cpu/ram leak or with like bitdefender, it all but locks down your system and auto deletes everything. Not doing anything shady, especially on my game computer, but its just too secure. I've refunded about 6 anti-virus programs and I used to always have one back in windows xp. And its not for a lack of working their settings either but there is no way am I going to spend 60-80$ and not use over half the settings.
Right now, they basically all seem like a huge scam to me as long as you just block ads at least. Ads and email documents from people that barely speak english. Thats whats going to get you.
But since they have made it a requirement to have SSL on the page hosting the ad, those numbers are greatly limited now too.
For the last 20+ years, I've always kept my computer ready to reformat. Now I have unlimited bandwidth too so thats nice.
Hunting for updated drivers on every last component in your device driver and researching anything weird in your event viewer will help keep your computer happily running.
