I don't really know why i checked this forum since i usually don't use Youtube VR but Gizmo VR to watch VR videos on youtube. But anyway, since people are saying (to my surprize) that only Youtube VR can play them I did a bit of testing. Gizmo can still play 3D 360 videos, and regular 3D videos on youtube, but VR180 videos do not work. They appear as regular videos, and I had thought they were just fakes uploaded by people desperate for clicks. But when I tried the same VR180 video in the YoutubeVR app it did work. It is a pity that, at least on the Valve Index, the controls are so dysfunctional that the app is totally unsusable.
I think that Gizmo is a quite decent player in its own right. This is a problem of Youtube insisting on having their own format. They did it with 360 videos before, and I tried playing one with Deo VR recently, and it could not handle the format, but Gizmo can. Hopefully, Gizmo will be updated to be able to handle Youtube's VR180 format as well. I have no hope for this YoutubeVR app since the last news update was made on June 14, 2018. Then again, it seems people say the quest version works well so they might be making an effort there. If I were prone to conspiracy theories I'd wonder if they did not have some kind of agreement with Oculus to neglect this app and ruin VR on Youtube for everybody else.
I'm using Rift-S so conspiracy theory needs a little work.
Apparently YoutubeVR has received an update recently. When this issue first started to happen VR180 was not playing at all. Then several days later there was an update and VR180 video did play; however a black menu square remains in place blocking the users view. This problem can be sidestepped by pointing at the video and dragging it till the black square is out of view. However its annoying still.
Yes, youtube's insistance on using a non standard encoding scheme also prevents people from downloading the video in full resolution for off-line viewing. A pity as anyone with slow internet has a very poor experience viewing online content.
Yes, I did notice that flaw in the theory myself.
It sure is a pity. I cannot bear with the flaws of YouTubeVR as it is. Navigation is impossible. The videos really should not be limited to only this app. At least I can continue to watch VR 360 with Gizmo. But I'd like to have the 180 stuff available as well. Unfortunately, Youtube has a history of making bad choices and changing the site for the worse.
Come to think of it, the theory still works, since you are apparently using the Steam version of the app (you are here, no?) and that is the one that they have neglected.
Is there a discussions area for oculus?. I'm not aware of one where Youtube would be monitoring. Its not in Youtube's interest to restrict views of their video's to a particular headset.
They make money when people see their videos, and associated adverts.
Anyway, VR180 can now still be viewed with YOUTUBEVR however you need to move the video away from the black square that still persists.
I have no clue about oculus, but I've seen comments somewhere saying that it works fine on the Quest. Obviously, I am just kidding about a conspiracy. It's just an unfortunate side-effect of their formatting, that the videos don't work on other players. Or something, I really don't know why, just that it doesn't work. As for this YouTubeVR app, the black box is just one problem. I don't know about other headsets, but on the Index, at least, I can't even browse videos in any reasonable way (not being able to scroll is as crippling as can be, and it interprets everything as a click so it starts videos when i try to move anywhere) so it is not in working order. I do not really expect the developers to come back and fix it either. I put my hopes in other players.
I find easier to just call up the video using firefox so that its then logged into my history. Then I run YOUTUBEVR and on the left side, bottom most icon, I call up my history and see all the videos there for me to select and run. The program works to a fashion but it needs some attention from the developer.
It does work to a degree. Because of the discussion here, I decided to give it another chance since I probably missed something, and realized you have to swipe on the touchpad to scroll (lucky that the index controllers have both the thumbstick and the touchpad). It's still really, really janky but I have been enjoying a fair amount of VR180 vids in it lately. I also discovered another bug, namely that the control window shrinks bit by bit over time until I can't read the text anymore. Weird. Oh well, I guess it'll be one player for one thing, another player for another thing, for the time being. Some of the vr180 videos on youtube are pretty high quality, so I don't want to pass them up even if I have to stroke this fickle app the way it likes it just a little bit longer.
anyone know of a nother way to watch vr180 vids on youtube with a rift s ?
my friend has the quest 2 , they can get youtube vr on oculus store, they are killing the rift not youtube vr.
It's not just the rift. It's all of PC VR. Youtube VR only works on android devices, such as the quest. It's a different version of the app. No other PC VR app can play VR180 videos from youtube. Gizmo VR can play 3D 360 at a capped resolution, but that's all you can get of VR videos from youtube. Youtube on PC VR is down for the count. The release of the Quest 2 could either help or hurt. Either quest users make VR on youtube popular by using it and talking about it, and someome will make it work for PC VR again. Or, quest could just divert attention away from the PC VR side and make developers ignore it even further. I hope it will be the former. It could also be that no change happens. We'll have to continue waiting.
I could not profess to know they are thinking. Seems to me, though, that downloading the videos may be more detrimental to their business model, since they get more clicks if people have to view videos on the website or their apps. But if we are still streaming the videos from youtube via a browser, and viewing them in a VR player, they still get clicks, right. It should not be a problem. Maybe the inability to stream to other players is just collateral damage. But the result, I think, does not really help youtube. It\s just turning youtube VR into a ghost town.
