Dialogue box glitch that hardlocks my game [SPOILERS?]

im encountering a glitch where sometimes when i get to a dialogue box there is no dialogue, which causes me not to be able to proceed or do anything besides open the menu. i have tried quitting out, restarting the game from the beginning, uninstalling and reinstalling (even doing so on another launcher) and i keep getting stuck in the same 2 places.

when you decide between Liza and Horace to teach you magic at the start, it locks me there,
and when i choose right after the portal closes which 3 friends to call.

so it seems to only not show the dialogue text or not let me interact with the box when it is a decision that affects someone?

i would love to play through more than 45 min of this game so any help would be greatly appreciated!
