Edit - Alrite I got it. Not sure how to hint this without completely giving it away, but you've definitely gotta use those unstable crystals that are scattered around the area. I started messing around with each spell on that crystal thats right next to you when you're dropped into your save point and had the "A-HA!" moment with one of the spells. See if that gets you started down the right path.
EDIT: Found out what to do now. The hands.
The boss is also either no-threat or cheat-threat with giant boulders from above that you have little warning in avoiding.
What needs to be done:
The boss has 2 crystals that need to be destroyed to remove that barrier, one in each hand. You have to break those first in order to remove the barrier around his heart.
If you want to know how to accomplish this:
He slams down his hands when you get to some of the platforms nearest him. You can move the crystals onto the center of those platforms and bait his hand onto them to break the crystals in his hands.
As for the boulders that rain down -- If you can see him, you'll know they're coming when he starts rocking side to side. If not, listen for the 3 grunts he makes. You should have about 5 seconds between the time he starts rocking until they're hitting the ground, and their position is set when he starts to rock, so you should have 3-4 seconds to move before you're in much danger. Your sanctuary spell will also protect you from them.
Can I make a suggestion?
Have the palm-attacks leave behind "prints" where the crystal's location leaves a glowing mark, as a hint.
