I recall this happening in Obduction as well.
This was probably my 'favorite' illogical thought process in the entire game. Instead of player just fiddling a little to clamber over that very minimal rubble, which is to daunting and risky a task for them.
Player is 'made' to risk life or death crossing a convoluted watering system, that's been unmaintained for who knows how long so it could quite possibly at any moment snap and send them to their death, obviously that's the safer option.
yes you could but this is a puzzle world you have to solve the puzzles. if this was the real world you could scale the mountains get some rope and repeal down structures. rip up planks to form a bridge but this is a game not real life. its like playing and escape room then getting mad that they don't just let you smash the box that a key is inside open instead of figuring out the padlock combo.
