Actually you don't even need to wait 22 minutes. All you need to do, is go straight to the observatory (don't bother with other tasks if you don't want to). Get the launch code, and the important part: meet the statue at the exit of said observatory afterwards. Then you are golden. Go jump over a cliff, die. You'll respawn with the code at the launch site. Also after a quit / continue game from here on.
The reason you don't really need to save is because the game is about exploring. And everything you learn, is stored in the ship log, which is saved even between loops. And you can get to most places within a minute or two from the launch site. It works pretty well.
Edit: i can't quote properly. :D
Hm.. Maybe you have to die and not quit in the first loop, to not loose progress? Just a thought (haven't tested that).
As I haven't really started playing a new playthrough yet (and I managed to erase my old), I tested what I described above: Simply went straight for the launch code, then jumped off a cliff at asap. That worked, I woke up with the launch codes (it might even be faster than walking all the way back :P). It reloaded just fine too.
(Sorry for the lateish answer..)
I'm very glad I gave it another chance though. You asked why it got so many positive reviews above here. I can't speak for others (I guess there's the reviews to read for that), but for me as a bit of a sci-fi nut with a, lets say passing interest in physics etc, plus I like single-player games, well, this game kind of ticks all those boxes.
In addition, it's also has a rather unique game mechanic. In that you can go wherever you want, and collect any pieces of the puzzle in whatever sequence. It manages to instill a kind of wonder of exploration, I'm not sure how to describe it.
I also held off in the beginning checking this game out, since I thought it looked a bit, uh, backpacker hillbilly-ish and not enough sci-fi I guess? Well I was wrong. Actually maybe not entirely wrong lol, bit backpackerish, but it's got all the cool sci-fi subjects I like and then some :)
But i agree with wrOngplanet, the game is very unique and good, 22 minutes after the launch and the game finally save your progress and after that you can quit anytime and the game will save your progress then too.
If free time for play the game is an issue, than you better know the game have 22 minute long "rounds" - i don't want to spoil it, but being in the space and looking at the center of the system to watch the causing event is very spectacular -, which places you back to a starting point. Also reload your saved game will place you there too. But it is acceptable as this game is a puzzle which didn't let you save before crucial moments, but let you try again in the next "round". Also it has a good in-game-world explanation for that.
Is this fish-eye vision normal for the game or only my problem?
