Is the DLC necessary/as good? cons?
Potential buyer here, I waited far too long to play this game. I was wondering if i should only buy the base game or if DLC provides on par if not better content and is it worthwhile?

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the information. I’ve decided to purchase both the game and the dlc. As of this edit, I’m a little over 3h in the game. What a blast! If only I had played this sooner

The DLC doesn't provide content for the main game, so you can buy it later if you're not sure.
As for the base game, absolutely buy it, it's the best game you'll ever play if you're a little bit curious.

It has been right up my alley for a while, held off due to other things going on in life. I've been quite interested :p

The DLC is amazing imo, very much worth experiencing. As mentioned, it's a standalone experience rather than an addition to the base game.

Echoes of the Eye matches the quality of the base game, absolutely. Its puzzles are wonderfully creative, while the setting is unlike anything else before it. It's all in its own corner of the solar system, but there might be two planets' worth of content to explore. You certainly don't need it to enjoy Outer Wilds, but the DLC will answer a question or two that the main story doesn't.

Cons? Parts of the DLC are dark, in a literal, sometimes pitch-black sense. If you're like me and hate not being able to see where you're going or what you're doing, the DLC can be vexing at times. Still, I love it despite that drawback, and the ending to that side story made the occasional frustration worth it.
This is a very unique game, and I think it's one of the best out there. The DLC gives you more of that. This is the kind of game that made me look for other games like it after it was over. There's honestly nothing like it. I think the base game is slightly better, but I could never think about Outer Wilds without the DLC being a very important component of it. This isn't some afterthought, the devs knew......

You can buy the DLC now and not even worry about it. You won't accidentally stumble into it. The game tells you there's a "New Exhibit" in the museum. So unless you start pulling the threads for the new exhibit clearly marked as such, there is pretty much zero chance you are going to find it.

Go into this game blind... :)

Not seeing? Yeah, kinda hate that. Going? Depends if the process is fun, which is relatively subjective. I’ll be looking into it. The game’s on a discount so I may just go on and buy both

I definitely love unique experiences. SIGNALIS is a game I played near its release and I’ve been in love ever since. Been desperate to find another product similar to it but couldn’t find anything similar. I will be both extremely happy and sad if Outer wilds makes me feel like I do for Signalis :’) but hey, think at this point I will be purchasing both the base game and dlc

DLC is independent from the base game, you can buy the base game first. But to fully understand the whole story, I think the DLC is needed, sooner or later.

... Let alone the DLC has the same -- sometimes even better quality than the base game. If you enjoy the base, you will also love DLC

(The most important thing: DO NOT WATCH/READ ANY VIDEOS/SPOILERS/ARTICLES... UNTIL YOU 100% FINISH THE GAME!!!!!just... do not listen to anyone talking about the game content... please don't...

I've been avoiding everything about this game ever since it released, I think you, the community have been doing well to gatekeep the story! I thank you. Haven't been spoiled a single time from you guys compared to other games. If I'm buying the game i may as well buy the dlc.
The story of the DLC ties into the story of the main game across multiple points, but in a subtle enough way that the main game without it is also its own complete story. It's well worth it in my opinion, and there is (as the game will tell you on start up if you have the DLC) a "reduced frights" option to make the annoying sections easier, in terms of its mechanics. Be curious on your journey!

I have decided to purchase the game and dlc. I will certainly take my time and be curious, I’m loving the vibes so far!
The DLC throws away the science puzzle exploration game and replaces it with stealth horror magic that requires deaths and memorization, rather than figuring things out like the base game. The base game is fantastic. The DLC, not so much.

Hey, I know the DLC is different, but even though it might not be as good in some eyes, it is done well. It is basically takes the concepts of exploration and kinda mixes it with trepidation and does it a bit differently. If you finish the main game, I’d recommend it. It’s not for everyone but I was happy with it.
