Anyway, more often than not, there is a way to your goal that allows you to completely avoid the creatures, or encounter as few of them as possible. Look at all of your options, plan out your routes in advance. You also shouldn't approach this as a stealth game — the dominant strategy is purposefully being seen/shining your light at them, and then running away while they investigate.
Just like with anglerfish, it might be worth getting caught by them a few times just to see what happens. Exposure therapy does tend to help in these sorts of situations.
It slows them down (which makes the sections easier), and it also makes everything feel less scary by changing the "ambiance soundtrack" and replacing some sounds.
