Your ship log (on the opposite side of the ship to the pilot's chair) should have a list of things you've heard or read about but have yet to find. This should hopefully allow you to find places to go?

It's hard to give you advices without spoiling too much if you don't give us more information.
As said by Perseus, look at your ship log, the big boxes are more important clues.
Usually planets have interesting locations to visit at the poles and on 4 sides along the equators.

Everywhere, every planet has a ton of places - the computer at the back of your ship keeps a list of places you've heard about, and every [?] on the rumour log is one you've never been to, those are your goals!

Find a planet that looks cool and just explore at your own pace. There's no "wrong direction".

Do you check your ship logs? Every question mark is a clue of where to look. Each location stating "There's more to explore here" gives you a reason to go to locations to search for info.
