Others report that if they turn down the physics processing that increases the chance of it working, but as we all only get one shot to be certain the achievement triggers, it's hard to narrow down if that's true or just coincidence
I've been using it to replay and record achievements.
Or instead, lock the physics calculation rate at 30 following the instructions on this page:
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Outer_Wilds#High_frame_rate
What island did you try this with? I've tried gabbro's, bramble and one other. They all appear to get me below the current but I think they are just putting me in the middle of it. And then my ship gets stuck, unable to escape the underside of the island as the current pushes me against it.
Well I didn't take the steps to lower my frame rate like shown, but I did run Death Stranding at the same time which definitely made both games chug. Still did not puncture through somewhere between 4-5km/s
tl;dr you can also do this by trapping your ship under this island when it gets launched into space. It's still up to to luck but this is the method that worked for me
