if I buy echoes can I disable it so I don't get confused with it in base game?
I've not finished base game yet but should grab it on sale I reckon

You can remove DLC by right-clicking on Outer Wilds in your Steam Library, selecting Properties, selecting the DLC tab, and then removing the tick from the Install box for the individual DLCs

fortunately, the echoes stuff is sufficiently "off to the side", so it doesn't interfere with the base game.
you might not even notice it's there unless you specifically go out of your way.

You will most likely not get confused by it if you don't go and look for the new exhibition in the museum

It's technically possible to run into it by accident. I've seen reports of it happening.

It's not in the same orbit as the other planet with theorically I guess it's possible.
In that case, I would say that if you venture in spce and everything become black all of a sudden, it's the DLC which won't bring clues for the main story (also you'll see it's separate in the ship log)
