Can you play just the expansion?
I finished the base game on Xbox, but I want to play just the DLC on Steam. Can you do this or do you need to first the base game first? (stand alone)?

You can just play the expansion - it's entirely separate (there's one bit at the end that's a little more rewarding if you've played the game first, but it's not a huge deal).]

Oh - wait you do need to own the base game if that's the question.

Yeah you're good then - it's a separate plotline. There's one little bit at the end that's a little better if you gather some ship log entries (but you can just track it down online once you finish), and there's a reason to do the final run after you beat the dlc (but you don't need to fly around everywhere and get log entries to do that).

Out of curiosity why would you want to play the dlc but not the base game?

They said they beat the base game on Xbox, so they just don't feel like flying around to get log entries a second time on PC I assume.

Actually I suppose you can probably find a save with all the log entries filled in too as an option.

I don't want to repeat the base game again even though I loved the base game so much and I heard great reviews of the expansion and from my understanding it's a separate plot line.

There are some slight differences in the DLC if you have a couple of log entries unlocked, so it's nice to grab those before playing the DLC.
For those, you need to:
- Visit the core of the Interloper and read the log there
- View the three panel mural in the Brittle Hollow settlement (near the escape pod) that shows the Vessel entangled by the Bramble
- Visit Solanum, just for good measure

You can download a save file with 100% base game completion.
