Also there is no way you've "fully explored" the stranger if you haven't been in the dream world yet, unless you were just following a walkthrough or were exceedingly thorough.
It's also to just figure it out by assuming the artifact must be important. Once you know it has to do with the fire in the chamber there's only so many things to try.
It's also a nice touch that there's a campfire near the radio tower to encourage learning about the sleep mechanic - which could tip you off if you're design-savy enough I suppose.
I found the breach WAY late game. I figured out the dozing off part because there was a slide reel showing the strangers entering the tower, going to sleep, and their artifacts light up.
