Yes, it is the end of the story on the Stranger, but I would suggest beating the base game again and see if you find anything new.
Try to see the ending again if you have seen it already. There's a good additional touch.
But I suppose you're both already dead. By the way... is there a way to find the right combination for the bell and reach him without being dead?
You and he floating away might have been a thank you, a slight plea that you (and your race) remember him (and his race) and that before the terror and the sadness, that they too set out to be explorers like the Hearthians.
Also, he probably doesnt know you're dead when you reach him, and so assumes you can carry on.
