It says best with game pad but does it work with keyboard and mouse? It travels all over the place. I can't get it to work.

Yes. There's articles to get it to work but I just used WASD. It's easy peasy. You'll be orbiting black holes and landing on sun stations like a pro in no time.

It controls perfectly fine with keyboard and mouse. There is one area where having analog input for acceleration ( = a controller) is an objective advantage. It is still doable with keyboard, though, so don't worry. We all did it and so will you.

Yes it does, it ok for 95% of the game.
There's just a part where you might need to not go full thrust and you can't slow down without a mod on keyboard. You would need the outer wilds mod manager and the smoothrust mod.
But you don't need them right at the beginning.

Keyboard and mouse are fine for 100% of the game, it's how I've played it exclusively. There's one section where analogue control of thrust would be nice but absolutely not required

If you're more used to WASD than controller it's definitely the better way to play

You can adjust the controller deadzone in the settings menu, increase it until it doesn't move on its own.
