What exactly are you missing? How many hours are you into the game?
It only gives me the option to quit.
You need to complete the first task given to you by Slate, and then head to your ship. You'll know when it happens. If it doesn't, then either you managed to do a glitchy thing, or the game glitched in general, and you might need to verify game files/reinstall/restart the game or something. I heard of one person who had an issue, no idea if they ever tried to play again. Saving isn't strictly necessary, since all you really gain is knowledge in this game.
https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage
as it may have a backup
As long as you've gotten past the prologue, it will autosave every time you see "Ship Log Updated", and you'll see the option to Resume Expedition at the menu
If you need to be sure you've started, get the launch codes and immediately fly into the sun or something. More specifically, if you already know the nature of the game: You need to have met the statue and completed the first loop, either by dying or reaching the end of it
I do not know the nature of this game as of yet and asking questions might end up spoiling things for me which I am attempting to avoid.
Yep, you've massively glitched passed the save point if you made it into space.
I recommend going back and talking to Hornfels and Hal. If nothing happens, restart the game and walk to go get the launch codes again, then Walk out of the Observatory the same way you entered. If still not working, The specific save point is: you need to walk past the statue after getting the launch codes from Hornfels
I walk past it each time and trigger it. I must need to reinstall the game.
While the Nomai statue is what initiates the in-game mechanic that allows for saving, the game does not "save" until you have died. The save automatically occurs once each loop begins and cannot be manually activated.
While looking for solutions to the save problem online I accidentally spoiled the end game 'solution.'
I was pretty close to figuring it out myself, it turns out.
I really enjoyed the ending but after getting so immersed in the world, and then having the game just fail, break my save through no fault of my own; and having the 'big reveal', ruined, it does leave a kinda sour taste in my mouth.
I would still recommend the game, but not to people that happen to encounter this error.
If I could make a recommendation; maybe have 'two' backup save folders each one backing up an 'earlier' save. That way if one of them fails there is another one to recover from earlier in time.
Admirable! You’ve not likely glitched anything (unless you’ve installed mods), but I can only imagine you’ve been playing small amounts, not dying but quitting?
Aye, and I have indeed died but it just restarts the game back at base camp and I need to redo everything I've done with no saves - which is why I figured it was an Ironman style game and you needed to burn through it as fast as possible.
No mods installed. I didn't know this game had Steam Workshop enabled.
Trying not to give much away but: you will always wake up at that campfire, no matter what
If you've got Resume Expedition, and when you wake up you can already see the Launch Codes in the bottom left of your screen, then everything is normal. Thinking of it like ironman gameplay isn't the worst idea, but there is a crucial difference
As well as there being some different dialogue with your campfire buddy, you should find your Ship's Log isn't empty anymore..
If on the other hand, New Expedition is the only option you ever have and you do have to redo the trek up to the observatory, something is wrong.. Resume should be an option as long as you've gotten the codes and died at least once after that point
I'm not being sent back to the campfire anymore upon death without codes and progress is being saved now in the ship's log. I am incredibly relieved this isn't an Ironman style game.
