Broken Controls
"The game is best played on a gamepad"....how? Up is Left, X is B, nothing works properly. Unplugging the controller and using WASD only let's me find out seconds later that my actual space bar I'm trying to use to jump won't even work in this game.

Does this have anything to do with them snuggling up to fartnite?

For those of you with input issues, please refer to our troubleshooting post here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/753640/discussions/1/2568689796946065157/

The short of it is that hardware (controllers, mice, and some other devices) may be reading as a controller and inputs are being split between them. Check your devices to make sure nothing else is being used as the default device. Otherwise, try some of the other solutions outlined in the post.

It's a bug. Force per-game input on in Steam's settings for the game, should fix the issue in the interim.
Fk man this is really worked

yet another miserable attempt at controller integration, it sees thrustmaster and uses it sort of, but totally ignores any changes in steam controller config so I cant remap, etc im done typing about piss poor controller support, there is some sort of voodoo that seems to break every other game i try, false advertizing to claim 'full control support'

having said that, i happen to have a knockoff xbox controller, and i plgged it in for a joke, then unplugged it, and put the thrustmaster back in, and now this game gives me option to use my controller as either profile, and if i use thrustmaster with this bizzare xbox profile, it sort of works, i can twist the stick and then the jump works

thankfully i happen to have 150 iq but god help everybody else trying to make controller work

I had an issue with X-Box controller input not working, and this fix worked for me:
  1. Quit the game (I had to force-quit through the Task Manager)
  2. In Steam, right-click on the game and select "Properties"
  3. Under "General", find the "Steam Input Per-Game Setting" -- set this dropdown to "Forced On"
  4. Close the Properties dialog
  5. Start the game

Lol! I don't disagree with your post, but that took the cake (and that's not a lie!).

Well. I caved in and re-bought it. Disabled any controller from the in-game menu, and just use the keyboard and mouse. And it works now :-) (May be due to some updates since last time I tried it in june?).

I may look into UCR / vJoy / HOTAS or similar later, to see if that works. Gotta put my Ph.D in PC controller tweaking to work :P I'm most comfortable with WASD for the "FPS" part of the game anyway though.

And btw the game is amazing!

yup
Try right click outer wilds/settings and turning the steam input per-game setting to forced on, seemed to work for me.

One thing I just noticed though.. when you use the Liftoff / Landing camera, the pitch control ("Invert Ship Lookl") is not inverted. Making it hard to switch between the two views for finetuning.

Playing In "Big Picture Mode" Worked For Me

JUST TO REMIND EVERYONE:

I got past my initial control problems and the WASD mouse worked just fine. I went on to have an incredible experience with this game over the next week after it was fully released last year and let me tell ya, I wish I could "forget" everything to experience it for the first time AGAIN!

A fantastic and wonderful game. Couldn't say enough good things about it. Anyone having control problems then: unplug your controller and anything other than your keyboard and mouse. Restart the game. If that still doesn't work, reinstall. Enjoy.

I updated this thread a couple days later when I realized I stumbled onto an absolute rare gem that sucked me into a mystery that took endless hours to unravel. A wonderful ride throughout!

Please don't pass up this game!!!!

Is using a controller recommended over mouse and keyboard? Trying to decide between getting this on PS4(played on PS5) or PC.

I'd say no (the splash screen is a lie!), but I'm biased as a PC user :) Depends on what you're used to I guess, so ymmw and all that. I can't comment on how a controller works on either PC or PS4/5. Kb/m was (almost) completely fine for me.

6+ months since I played this game, and now I want to again, but you can only get the wonder and mystery once :tcry: I'm not saying I remember every little detail, but this is like seeing The Matrix the second time. By then you know how it is.

And most important, do not look at spoilers
What did I just say? DO NOT LOOK AT SPOILERS! :-)
