As a less abrasive response than some others - the galaxy in this game is one big story but putting it together is up to you. You'll end up going basically everywhere.
In game, to everyone else, it's just an average day. You'll soon find something tells you it is not, and discovering what there is to do, let alone what you can do about it, is part of the game
If you feel lost, check the Ship Log which keeps track of everything you've seen and heard throughout the game and "Rumour Mode" in it will draw you a big chart of how those pieces of info connect and where they potentially lead, in some cases it will let you mark on your map where you found it or where it points to. This is the closest equivalent to a mission log or quest markers the game has
The home village gives you a few story threads to start with, the location of some of your fellow travellers to go chat to them, and a general mission to translate a lot of the alien writings across the galaxy since you're the only one with the newly completed translation device
1. start with something small - learn to fly, go visit the moon and explore what's there.
2. meet with the other astronauts - each is at an interesting location and has insights on where you could go explore next.
3. investigate the nomai writings - the blue decodable text at the museum mentions a 'device on the moon'. There, you could find further writing to give you a plan of action.
You also pick up various rumors from talking to people and reading texts.
The ship's computer has "rumor mode", which will have arrows with text referring to a location and something of interest.
Your signalscope will rack up various frequencies as you play. This will point you to sources of signals, which are always in key locations of interest.
Each planet has at least five or more points of interest to visit. Often it's the north pole, south pole, around the equator, etc. The starting planet is no exception.
As to "what is the idea of this game"? Well, you start with a plan to go into space and join your colleagues in exploring the solar system. You are bringing an unique language decoder, with the goal to finally figure out what all that alien writing means. But as you prepare to leave, weird stuff starts happening. Soon after you discover that something is very wrong, and you are the only one that can try to do something about it. That becomes your main objective, and exploration and reading become your means of accomplishing this objective.
Star systems have one star and some planets, a galaxy is composed of millions of star systems.
